Chapter 3: Broken Branches
A loud knock on my door woke me up. But I just laid there motionless until I heard another knock. I finally got up and walked lazily to the door and opened it. "Hey baby sister." said a voice that I hadn't heard in years. "Devin!" I leaped on him in an embrace like a little kid. He chuckled. His big strong arms wrapped around me was such a relief, from everything. I finally let go after a good five minutes, we head headed down stairs. I walked over to the kitchen and poured us both a glass of lemonade. I gave him a glass and I set mine down on the coffee table.
"Oh my gosh! Devin I can't believe it's you!" I couldn't take the grin off my face with just the thought of seeing my brother for what might have been five years.
"Yup, so where's mom?" He asked looking around.
"Ummm, I dont know. But tell me where have you been? What have you been doing? Are you married? Do you have kids?" I couldn't stop asking all these stupid questions I was way to exited.
"Sian...If you don't remember I'm just four years older than you. I'm not married. I don't have kids. And I have just been around always keeping my eye on you." He winked.
I laughed.
"But seriously, where's mum?"
"I don't know, maybe she went for a walk or something. I got pretty frustrated at her a couple hours ago."
"But it's almost eleven, mum shouldn't be out this late." His voice cracked after every word.
"She'll be fine."
He got up really fast and headed for the door he looked at me and said, "Stay." He headed out the door and I just watched, why was he so worried? It's Johnsville for God's sake. What could ever happen here?
