Caught Off Guard

I slowly walked away from Nico's car, strangely with a spring in my step. Nico was a pretty cool girl. Not only that, but she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I had always felt the same way for her, though I knew she would probably never feel the same about me. The last person she dated was Alex, but when Amy died, they broke up and she went goth and became distant, and shut everyone out. Aside from all of that, I was still excited about tonight. Maybe I could try to talk to Nico some, like old times.
I was thinking so much about this that I nearly ran into Gert.
"Hey Karolina."
"Wha --- oh. Hey Gert. Hey Molly."
"Are you going to Alex's house tonight?"
"Yeah. I'm pretty sure we're all going. We all want to know what our parents are up to."
"True. Alright. See you later then."
"Yeah, see you."
I was a few steps from Molly and Gert when Gert called back at me again.
"Hey, Karolina! Wait, I have to ask you something."
"Sure. What is it?"
"So... you and Nico. Do you... like her or something?"
"Why do ask that?"
"I don't know. I just... I saw her look at you when she came out of school, and then I saw you guys talking at her car. I mean sure everyone looks at each other, but not like she looked at you."
"Really?! I mean... no I don't like her. I gotta go, I'll see you tonight okay?"
"Yeah okay. See you tonight."
My heart was beating so fast I thought I was going to die. I was so happy. Nico looked at me? Maybe there was a chance that I could be with her.
Shut up Karolina! You're thinking too fast, and you're moving too fast. There's no way. Gert just saw the wrong thing... and caught me off guard, that's for sure.
I quickly ran to my car and headed home. Maybe going to Alex's wasn't going to be the worst night after all.
