"Um. What are you guys doing?"
I opened my eyes and saw Gert standing over me.
"Nothing! We just uh... Nico must have fallen off of the couch last night. That's why we're so close," I said.
Nico was up now, and she was trying to explain as well. Gert didn't seem to be buying our explanation, but she was already on to us. I felt like she already knew, after she confronted me about my feelings for Nico yesterday. Hopefully she wouldn't tell the rest of the group. It would only make things more complicated.
"Well, we better get home. Last night was a rough one... I'll grab my bags and leave," said Nico.
"Yeah, I should probably get going too. I have an interview at the church today, and my mom will kill me if I'm late," I said.
I quickly ran and got my bags and hurried out the door. I walked to my car and stuffed my things in the trunk. As I was stuffing everything in, Nico came and put one arm on the top of the hatchback and just stood there.
"So... last night. I'm sorry if I made you feel-"
I put my finger to her mouth.
"Nico. You don't need to apologize about anything," I said, laughing. "That was the happiest I've been... in a long time. I felt like myself for once."
She looked at me with an understanding expression on her face, kissed me, and walked away. My heart stopped, as if we had never done it before. I didn't know if I would ever get used to the feeling. The feeling of being happy.
