"Ugh!"
Beca stormed into her home after a long day at work, chucking her laptop bag onto the kitchen counter as she went.
"Tough day at the office?" Chloe asked, looking up as Beca came to a halt right in front of her.
"Ugh! You have no idea!" Beca groaned, face in hands.
Chloe simply smiled, pulling Beca into a warm hug. She knew Beca's tendency to overreact, and it brought a smile to Chloe's face whenever Beca got this frustrated. She was sure this would only be something small. Something she could fix.
"What did your boss want?" She asked, still holding Beca close.
Beca sighed, breathing in Chloe's sent. The woman's hair was up her nose and in her mouth, but Beca didn't care. This was how she liked it. This was where she was safe.
Reluctantly Beca lifted her chin, resting it on Chloe's shoulder instead. Their heads were nestled together. They'd been like that a lot recently, getting through life together. The knock backs just kept coming.
As they stood there, Chloe felt Beca's heart rate begin to return to normal. Inwardly, she breathed a sigh of relief. There was always a chance Beca might spiral into one of her old panics. Although, nowadays, they were rare.
"She's too busy keeping it together for me..." Chloe thought guiltily. She squeezed Beca tighter.
"He offered me a job..." Beca mumbled quietly.
"What?" Chloe said in surprise, letting go of Beca so they could look at each other. "But you already have a job!"
"Yeah, I know... But not for much longer if I don't take this one." Beca sighed, rubbing her temples.
"What do you mean? What's going on Bec?" Chloe asked, clearly confused.
"The company's expanding to more cities because it's doing so well. Half the people I work with are moving to the new base instead, or being layed off if they can't." She explained.
"And what about you?"
"They've offered me a promotion..." Beca admitted.
"Beca, that's great!" Chloe began. Beca lifted her hand to stop her.
"In the Brooklyn base..." She finished. Chloe's excitement dropped.
Beca watched as Chloe's face scrunched up in confusion as she processed what that meant. A glimpse of the Chloe from two years ago flickered into focus - the grey look on her face, wrinkles under her eyes. Beca shuddered.
"But that's the other side of the country!" Chloe cried. "You can't be working that far away. It's too far from our home! Especially with- with- ...everything there been going on! They can't do this!"
"They said they'll pay for flights to get there and rent for an apartment for the first six months. They really want this." Beca said quietly. "The pay will be good..."
Chloe looked at Beca, angry at her for the first time in months. Beca bit her lip, knowing what was coming.
"Beca, I moved all the way from Atlanta to come here and live with you and Bea in LA." Her voice quivered. "All because you insisted that you couldn't move Beatrice. You said it wouldn't be good for her. You said she needed to stay here, in her home. But now it's your job asking you to move it's suddenly okay?" She raged, fists clenched. "Come on, Beca!"
Chloe and Beca sat opposite each other in Beca's local coffee shop, both sitting in a comfortable silence. It had been a week since their kiss on the couch that night - their first kiss in eight years - and it had been the best week of Beca's life. She never wanted it to end.
