Beca lay next to Chloe in bed, Chloe's head on her chest. She ran her fingers through the tangle of ginger hair that tickled her neck, enjoying the feeling of just being together.
For the rest of the day neither Beca nor Chloe mentioned Beca's job predicament. They had unanimously decided not to bring it up around Beatrice, not wanting to unsettle her.
Now that Beatrice was in bed, however, there was no avoiding it. They simply had to discuss what they were going to do.
"So I spoke to Amy earlier..." Beca began cautiously.
"Hmm?" Chloe hummed in response, not opening her eyes.
"The rent for her apartment in Atlanta is running out at the end of the month. She can't afford to pay it anymore." Beca said, biting her lip.
Chloe sat up, propping her head up with her elbow to look at Beca.
"Oh no, that's awful." She said, concerned for Amy. But the longer she looked at Beca's face, who was unable to meet Chloe's eyes, the more confused Chloe felt. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying I think it would be best if I took the promotion and stayed in an apartment with Amy for a while... Just until things get settled. It's good money and I need to have a job. You know we need this for...our future. You and Bea could stay here for a while. Then Bee wouldn't have to change schools and you could keep your job." Beca stopped, noticing Chloe's face. "It won't be forever..." She said quickly but cautiously, her eyes flicking from the blanket to Chloe and back again.
"You're leaving us?" Chloe asked, her voice catching.
There were tears in her eyes. Her thoughts were written all over her face; 'not again'.
"No! God, no! Not really." Beca cried, looking up for real and grabbing Chloe's free hand in both of hers.
Chloe looked up at Beca through her eyelashes. The the old glimmer of distrust and doubt flickered behind her gaze.
"No. Never." Beca repeated firmly. "I love you, Chlo."
She dipped her head down, catching Chloe's lips in her own. Chloe sighed into the kiss, relaxing a little. Beca loved her. That was all that mattered. Beca loved her.
"I don't want you to take the promotion..." Chloe mumbled into Beca's lips, clutching her hands tightly.
"Chloe, I-"
"Not without me." Chloe finished. She pulled away, cupping Beca's face gently, looking deep into her eyes. "Let me come with you."
"But Chloe, your job." Beca protested.
"Beca, I hate my job." Chloe said in a rush, finally spitting out the truth. "I hate teaching a bunch of kids who never listen to me. It's hard, especially at the moment. I'm too... exhausted...to do my job properly."
Her hands fell away from Beca's face, laying on top of their body's helplessly. She hung her head.
Beca looked up in shock.
"I thought-... You used to enjoy teaching. Why didn't you tell me?" She asked.
"Because you love your job. Because your life is here. Because I want you to be happy. And I knew you wouldn't be if you knew..." Chloe's voice faded away.
She looked down at her chest, trying not to meet Beca's eye in case she was mad. She felt the bed shift.
"Chloe..." Beca whispered, putting her hands on Chloe's cheeks so she could turn Chloe's face to meet here. Chloe smiled apologetically, meeting Beca's gaze.
"I should have told you," she admitted. Beca shook her head, pecking Chloe's lips.
"I love you." She stated simply. Chloe blushed, looking away. So Beca said it again, this time laughing. "I love you, you weirdo."
"So you're not mad?" Chloe checked, smirking at Beca.
"No, I'm not mad." Beca chuckled. Then her expression turned mock-serious. "You know I can't stay mad at you anyway."
Chloe smirked.
"No. You can't." She winked, pecking Beca's lips this time.
Beca smiled, shifting slightly so that she could kiss Chloe properly. One of her hands slid down to cup the back of Chloe's neck, while the other supported her back.
Chloe's hands were partly on the sides of Beca's neck and partly on her jawline. The kiss was slow and full of love. In other words, it was perfect.
Eventually Chloe pulled away the two of them panting a little. Chloe let her head drop forwards against Beca's, just as Beca lent forwards to do the same. They chuckled at the quiet clunk as their foreheads met harder than expected.
"So what do we do?" Chloe said softly.
Both their eyes were closed, their breathing in sync. Beca sighed, sucking a strand of hair behind Chloe's ear without even looking.
"I don't know." She admitted.
"You have to go." Chloe sighed, not liking it but not arguing either. She knew it couldn't be helped.
"I do." Beca agreed, entwining her fingers with Chloe's on their laps.
"I don't want to work in a school in Brooklyn..." Chloe said nervously, opening her eyes to guage Beca's reaction.
"No?" Beca asked, keeping her eyes closed and her face neutral. She could feel Chloe's gaze.
"But I'm not qualified to do anything else." Chloe squeezed her eyes shut before opening them again. Beca didn't answer. So Chloe decided to tell Beca the whole truth. "I want to go back to school."
Beca opened her eyes then, meeting Chloe's worried ones. She smiled, pushing her nose against Chloe's, a quiet sign of support.
"Oh? And do what?" Beca asked, genuinely interested. "Because you didn't spend enough years there the first time?"
Chloe smiled and rolled her eyes playfully, content that Beca wasn't going to laugh at her. She pulled away, propping herself up against the bedframe so that she could properly look at Beca. Beca followed her lead, as usual.
"Well, I've actually been looking into it in my free periods, and I really think I'd like to try vet school." Chloe said in a stream of speech. "But it's so hard to get in to, I really don't know if I can do it. We could never afford for me to try it sooner. But maybe, with your raise, and if I tried really hard. I know I've never been that... accidentally inclined...and I'm not sure if-"
"Chloe!" Beca interrupted, laughing and grabbing Chloe's animated hands. "You have never not done anything you've put your mind to in all the years I've known you. If you want to get into vet school, you'll get into vet school." She kissed Chloe's fingers, watching the woman blush. "Okay?"
"Okay."
