I've been a Sailor Moon fan since before I can even remember but one thing always bothered me about it. More so than even Superman how does NO ONE KNOW WHO THEY ARE?!
All they do is change clothes essentially and no one even close friends or family recognize them.
So here is my theory on why after rewatching the first 2 seasons of the old show.
D.C. comics has a hero named Shazam or Captain Marvel, he's a kid (Billy) that transforms into a full grown man who is very Supermanesque.
The Sailor Guardians are also kids, they're supposed to be in Jr high at the start of the show BUT the are also reincarnations of their passed selves who according to the sources I can find were hundreds of years old on the Moon Kingdom Silver Millennium.
So I believe when the girls transform they are actually physically changing as well to look more like their older selves from their past lives.
This would mean they end up taller, more busty and having their faces change slightly as well appearing older and more mature. So even if a family member or friend sees them and thinks "Wow Usagi sure looks like Sailor Moon" there would be no rhyme or reason to believe your teenage skinny flat chested and slightly shorter friend was secretly Sailor Moon.
The piece of evidence that's ultimately proved this for me was looking back at my old art books. There were pictures of the scouts normally side by side their transformations and they looked taller and bustier and if the changes were that subtle we wouldn't really notice in the anime since most anime characters look identical only with different hair.
