Could I do it? Aviva wondered. Can I create things with my imagination? She thought of the first thing Navin had made appear: a horse. Aviva closed her eyes and started imagining a horse. Brown color coat. Medium height. Black mane and tail. Running toward me and whinnying.
She opened her eyes and looked around, but much to her chagrin, she could not see a horse anywhere. Aviva slumped to the ground, defeated, and picked a dandelion from the ground. She twirled and watched the petals wave in the wind.
Start with something simple, she thought, That's what I do when learning other things. Maybe a horse was too complex.
Resolved, Aviva stared at the dandelion in her right hand. Then she looked at her empty left hand and tried to picture a flower held in it.
A dandelion. Yellow petals. Green leaf and thin stem. Pointer and middle fingers pinching the stem. The rest of the stem resting in my palm. Could she see a faint outline?
Yes, cupped in her palm was a pool of yellow and green color in the vague shape of a flower. Aviva tried to concentrate harder, tried to make the mental picture clearer, but the flower did not change appearance.
Sighing, she released the image from her mind and stood up. Why was it so easy for Navin?
