Aviva inhaled the fresh air and smiled at her younger brother sitting at her side. They were both stretched out in a field enjoying the sunset. Navin smiled back at her.
"It's almost time for bed. Ready to go back?" she asked.
"No." he grinned, but he stood up anyway. Aviva took his small hand and they started to walk back through the tall grass.
"Look! Do you see the pony?" Navin exclaimed.
Aviva smiled at the empty field. "He's lovely."
"And there's another! And another! Oh, there's a whole herd going through this field!"
Navin pulled her to a halt to watch the nonexistent ponies galavant through the field. She sighed. Sometimes, it seemed that Navin had too active an imagination. It was cute, and she played along, but he was almost ten. He needed to grow up a little bit.
"Stay quiet." he whispered to her. Aviva obliged. Until she felt something breath on her neck.
"What was that?" she cried out and jerked away from Navin.
"A pony." he said, with a completely straight face. "Pet him!"
Aviva turned to where Navin was looking, sighed, and reached out a hand to mime petting a horse. But instead of caressing thin air, she found that she was touching a warm flank. Amazed, she told herself that she was imagining it. But then Navin reached out a hand and started petting the horse too.
"Can we take him home?" he asked.
"I...umm...he can live here and we'll come visit." Aviva stammered. "Let's go home."
