"This is your room, Violet." I get ushered into a bedroom that is supposedly mine. There was a big plush bed in the middle of the room and the room looked like one of those pictures that came from Pinterest. I guess it was my room since there was every shade of purple in this room that matches the name they have been calling me.
So far, I have been told that my name is Violet Thompson, I am 19-years-old, I am half Korean and half Scottish, and that I have an identical twin named Stanley. I had been involved in a hit and run accident where I was driving home at around 11:00 PM and someone ran a red light. Thankfully I had a dash cam and it helped explain I wasn't a reckless driver.
Miraculously, I survived but I had sustained a concussion, whiplash, and amnesia. I have no memory of the last 19 years I have lived, but the doctor said I would get my memory back over time. So in the meantime, I would just have to relearn everything.
"Thanks, mom. I'm so sorry I made you worry..." I turned to the woman that ushered me into my room. The Asian woman that was by my bed at the hospital was my mom and she introduced herself to me as Eddie Jung. Jackson Thompson is my dad and he was rushing home from Hong Kong where his business trip was currently taking place.
"It's okay honey. Just get some rest. All your belongings are on your desk over there. You kept your passwords stuck to the inside of your journal. The first journal that's on the shelf above your desk. I will call you down for dinner." And with that, she gave me a squeeze in the hand and left me. I didn't realize at first, but my mom was holding onto my hand the whole entire time. The whole time in the hospital, the drive back home, and the entire tour of the house. It had been a very weird day so far, but at least I now have time just for myself.
Not knowing what had happened over the last 19 years was frustrating, to say the least. I concentrated and tried to search my mind for anything, just anything. Nope. Nothing. Nada. I wonder if looking at myself would help at all. There was a full-length mirror right beside my closet and dresser on the left of my room. When I saw the person looking back at me, I still had no idea who I was except for the little bits and pieces I was given.
The reflection of the girl standing in front of me was nothing like the pictures my mom and Stanley tried to show me. It didn't trigger any memories at all. Instead of a cheerful and healthy built body, the girl standing in front of me was too thin, very weak, and looked nothing like the pictures they had shown me. However, even in a weakened state, the girl standing in front of me was very beautiful and unique. The one thing that stood out the most was the various shades of purple hiding under the top layer of hair and the warm chocolate brown eyes she had.
Briiiiing, briiiiing, briiiiing.
Something in the backpack on my desk was vibrating and making a lot of noise. I searched the bag and pull out a device that I saw Stanley playing with while waiting for my examinations at the hospital to finish. And of course, there was a dark plum coloured case on it. I must have lived up to my name. Taylor Mackenzie is calling me but who's that? Augh, I hate this so much.
"Hello?" I swiped across the screen to answer the call.
"OH MY GOD VIOLET! ARE YOU OKAY? I'M COMING OVER RIGHT NOW!" Taylor was screaming into her phone and it made the pounding in my head worse.
"Yeah, I'm okay... but can you please lower your voice." My head hurt. And I need to rest so I don't know if I should ask her who she is if she's already overreacting like this. Who knows how long she'd take just to answer a simple question...
"Oh sorry! We're just all so worried about you after you left bubble tea without saying a word and then we get a phone call from Stanley asking where you are. Like we know you were already stressed and overworking yourself by taking extra classes and stuff but OH MY GOD WE GOT SO FRIGGEN WORRIED WHEN WE SAW YOU AT THE HOSPITAL!" Taylor just kept on blabbing so much.
"Shh please..." I try to calm her down, but she was just very energetic and enthusiastic. "Taylor?"
"Mhmm yeah?"
"I have amnesia so I can't remember anything and sorry, but I don't know who you are either so..." Well, she stopped talking. Jeez, her voice was making my headache worse and worse. I started to pace in my room and squeezed my temples trying to relieve the strain in my head as I probed my brain for information.
"But I'm your best friend for as long as I can remember... I'm basically your sister from another mother..." Taylor was so quiet I could barely hear her anymore and then she cranked it up so loud my eardrum felt like it was going to explode. "I guess I just wasn't that important to be remembered. You always put her first and forget about me! It's always been like that and I wouldn't be surprised if you even remember her now instead!"
Suddenly, the phone that I was holding against my ear was snatched from behind me. I whipped around and there stood Stanley with my phone against his ear.
"Taylor, I know you might be upset since Vi can't remember you but she doesn't even remember anything about herself or anything... Not even her... Yeah, it's that serious... The doctor said he doesn't know... The memories will come back over a period of time... Well, you can speak to her later... Yeah, she really needs to rest... Mhmm, thanks and bye!" He ended the call with Taylor and turns around to look at me. He took a deep breath and rubbed his eyes. "Hey, you feeling fine? If there's anything you need to talk about, I'm here for you. As always."
"Well, there isn't much to talk about when I can't remember anything..." He took my hand to lead me to my bed and tucked me into bed. "It's very frustrating and I just want to remember..." I could feel the tears that I have been suppressing for a while now come up. "I try to remember but there's just this big gaping hole in my mind." Stanley sat on my bed after brushing my tears away.
"Vi, don't take it so hard on yourself okay? No one wanted this to happen and this applies to you as well. Why don't you take a nap and when you're well rested, we can talk about it again." He kissed my forehead and headed toward the blinds to close them to block out the blinding sunset rays. Right before he left my room, he pointed towards the shelf at my desk. "Hey Vi, if you really want to, you can read all those diaries - I mean journals - you have written throughout the years, after you're well rested. It might help you fill that gaping hole of yours." He winked and gave a half crooked smile before closing the door.
I moved my head over to take a better look at the shelf above my desk. Counting the amount of books that was piling on top of each other made my eyes heavier and heavier. At around the twelfth book, I felt my eyes close.
