I leaned my head on the body that had silently perched themselves next to me in the water. "Do you want to talk?" Eloise asked. I did want to talk. I had wanted to talk. I still wanted to talk. But I no longer had the words in me, so I shook my head.
The waves rode over us together. I didn't even notice the tears falling down my cheeks.
Maybe I did have the words... "Did you hook up with Adrian?" My voice was croaky and shaking.
"I tried to." I nodded. I knew it.
"Is this what he's become? If I'm not available then you all go running to him? This is why I never get him involved with anything. You're unbelievable." I stood up. My clothes were heavy with water and I deeply regretted sitting down.
When I turned around, Adrian was standing there awkwardly, watching us from a distance. "Why are you here? Come to find out if I have any other exes you can take off me?"
"Dan, don't be like that..." He trailed off.
"Why are you even here?" I didn't know whether I was shaking from the cold, anger, or fear.
"I want to apologise to you-" I interrupted him.
"I am done with this. I am done with this drama. I am done with you." I started to walk off, when I heard Eloise's wet feet slamming the sand behind me. I stopped.
I was right in the first place, I didn't have the words. Not ones that would make an impact. They're not the words I wanted to say earlier.
"Please, listen to me, that note was my goodbye to you. I didn't want to see you again. I want to be over you. I didn't think you'd come looking for me."
"Of course I came looking for you!" I was shouting now. "Eloise, I love Phil, not you. But I need you in my life. You fixed everything. Yeah, sure, you've now fucked it all up again, but you did fix it - you could fix this too. Please just leave Adrian alone, hang out with me, be my mate, fix mine and Phil's problems-"
"I don't want to be your fucking counsellor." She spat the words out, disgustedly. "I am sticking to my word. I'm leaving. It's not just you, it's my family. Shit's gone down and I need to leave." She patted me on the shoulder as a way of goodbye. I caught her hand.
"Why did that kiss mean so much to you?" Her eyes locked with mine, and I felt like she could read my mind, everyone seemed to be able to read my mind except me.
"Isn't it obvious?" She sighed. "I love you." Those were her last words to me. Then she walked off.
Then the bomb dropped.
A huge explosion came from the edge of the town. Adrian and I were knocked back. The force that hit us was the most pain I had ever felt. I had never been pushed back so far. The pebbles dug into my body and I heard screaming everywhere.
My eyes blinked, like a mole arising from its hole into the sunlight. I looked to my left. Phil was by my side, I was in hospital. My neck ached like hell. Everything ached. I groaned, a long, painful groan. Phil hushed me and stroked my hand. "What the actual fuck happened?" Phil glanced up at the doctor who was proding me every now and again. He nodded at Phil.
"There was a terrorist attack. We don't know much about it yet." Phil's voice was soft and gentle.
"How's Adrian? And Eloise?" I suddenly jolted up. Phil placed his strong warm hands on my shoulders and gently guided me back down.
"Both fine. Adrian is up and about again and Eloise is too. The more important question here is: are you okay?" I rolled my eyes at him. "She's moved, you know."
I did know. I knew I was never going to see her again. I knew that her first words to me were "Hi, are you Dan Howell? Can I get a picture?" I remember being annoyed with her. I also knew her last words to me were: "I love you." I remember being frustrated with her.
I sighed. "Hey, Dan, she'll be fine." I nodded. "Adrian will be fine." I nodded again. He nudged me. "We'll be fine." He gave me a wide grin and kissed me.
"Before, what did Eloise say to you?" I whispered.
"She asked me if I would risk my life for you. And I said yes. I mean, of course I would. That's when I realised how much I love you."
