Kirino's POV

A couple weeks after our entrance exam, I've gotten comfortable with being in the office. It was quite enjoyable. I frequently immersed myself in conversations with Ranpo about his investigations. Dazai even found a Chuuya-substitute in a man called Kunikida, although they don't seem to hate each other thankfully. Rather, it would be a sin to not tease Kunikida.

"Hikoku-san, please report to the President's office. He has a mission for you." Kunikida said as he passed by my desk before sitting down on his own. I stood up along with Dazai.

"Not you Dazai, just Hikoku-san." Kunikida said without looking up.

"But, we are partners! We always go on missions together." Dazai protested. I put my hand up, signaling for Dazai to sit down.

"I can handle it Osamu. I'll be back soon, okay?" I told him. He gave me a worried look in response, but sat back down nonetheless. Giving him one last smile, I headed to the President's office.

"Good morning, President. You called for me?" I greeted the stern-looking man.

"Yes. I recognize that your ability and combat style are both highly qualified for offensive and defensive missions. We need your skills." the President explained.

"What do you need me to do?" I asked.

"I need you to infiltrate an organization called, Grandelia. You will act as a spy for us. This mission does go along the gray lines of what the Armed Detective Agency's morals, but it is necessary for the future of Yokohama." the President said.

I contemplated the qualifications of this mission. I've done stuff like this in Port Mafia before, but never alone.

"How long will I be gone? And can Dazai come with me?" I asked

"It should take around 4 years, but I need you to do this alone. It is too risky to bring Dazai with you. I don't have anyone in the Agency that can handle this as well as you can." he said with some sympathy.

If no one else can do this... then I guess I don't really have much of a choice.

"I'll do it." I told the President.

With a smile and grunt of approval, he sent me away from his office. Now I just have to think about how I'm going to break it to Dazai. We have never been apart for this long since we've met.I spent the rest of the day thinking about the next 4 years of my life... that's if I am able to return alive from the mission. I couldn't concentrate on my work, and I think Dazai could tell. He kept sending me glances so that I would talk to him privately, only for me to ignore them. I didn't want to face him, knowing that I would be gone for a long time without him.

Dazai's POV

Hmmm ignoring me I see... something must be wrong for her to act this way. Irritated by her lack of cooperation, I marched over to her desk and tugged at her wrist.

"Where are you taking me?" She asked, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.

"Hey, Dazai-" Kunikida began to say, but I gave him the meanest glare I could ever muster to shut him up.

"Let's go. Now." I commanded. There is no way I'm letting her worm out of this. Whatever her issue is, she needs to tell me or else I'm going to be pissed. Once we were outside of the room and out in the hallway, she tried to run away and get away from me.

Slamming my hand next to her head, I trap her in between my body and the wall. Glaring down at her small form, I spoke, "Kirino, what are you hiding from me?"

She looked away from me, unwilling to say anything. Her face would appear to be emotionless to any other bystander, but I could see guilt written all over her face. I waited for her response in silence until she was ready.

"Osamu-kun, promise me you won't be mad?" she asked.

"I can't make that kind of promise until you tell me what it is." I told her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, composing herself to say what seems like a death sentence.

"I'm going away for four years." she said.

A rush of panic courses through my body once those words leave her mouth. "What?! 4 years?! What the hell are you going to go? Whatever it is, I better be going with you!" I yelled.

" You can't. I was assigned a solo mission to infiltrate a possible enemy organization. The operation should take about 4 years. I can't refuse, they could destroy all of Yokohama." she said.

I slammed my fist into the wall in frustration. What am I supposed to do without her for 4 years? We have been together almost every day for the past 8 years, but now I'm expected to wait for 4 years to see her come back possibly dead? What a joke.

"I'm going to talk to the President." I said in a low voice.

"No, Osamu! Don't!" she pleaded.

"I'm supposed to let you kill yourself? This is the exact type of mission that made Angou betray us! There is no way I'm going to let you go, especially alone." I yelled at her.

"But I want to go! This is my chance to fight for the light, just like what Odasaku wanted. Please let me do this. I promise you, I will come back to you. Maybe I can become a new, better person in the next 4 years." she said with hope in her eyes.

"But, what am I supposed to do without you?" I asked.

She pushes my arm down and away from the wall. Taking one step closer to me, she wound her arms tightly around me.

"Wait for me, Osamu. 4 years will pass, and I will come back to you and the Armed Detective Agency. In the meantime, work towards your version of 'good'. We can never wash away our sins, and I don't want to. But now is the time to start planting the seeds of good within us." she whispered, her head directly in front of my heart as she spreads her warmth throughout my body. She doesn't realize the effect she has on me.

"So when do you leave?" I ask quietly.

"Tonight."

I wrapped my arms around her tighter.

"Okay, come back to me safe." I told her breaking away from the hug, but still holding on to her shoulders. With a boost of courage, I leaned down and kissed her forehead.

From that single action, her entire face bloomed bright red. It was the most adorable sight I have ever seen in my entire life. Giving her a smile, I put my hand on the knob leading to the Agency.

"I'll see you later, Kirino-chan"

"Yeah, see you later Osamu-kun"
