Violet shrieked as she was pulled into Rennan's embrace and pushed against him some, "Why are you here?"
"I couldn't watch that shithead hurt you anymore." Violet was silent at this and Rennan took his chance and pulled them out of the dream, jolting them into the real world as Violet woke up.
She smacked Rennan in the face withe her head as she sat up, coughing violently. "What the fuck!" Rennan rubbed his nose as he sat up beside Violet. He turned to look at her and she quickly turned away from him to face the wall. She was still coughing and Rennan put a hand on her shoulder and turned her towards him. Her hand fell from her mouth and he looked at her face with concern, "Are you okay?"
Violet was silent and Rennan's eyes travelled over her to see if she was hurt. His gaze was drawn to a drop of red blood that had made its way down the side of her closed hand and he grabbed her hand and forced her fingers open.
She turned away from Rennan as he held her hand open, "What the hell is this." Rennan said, "You coughed up blood in that dream but it shouldn't happen in real life." Violet didn't answer and Rennan gently grabbed her chin and pulled her to face him. "Violet, I need to know what's happening to you so I can help. If this is part of the curse then it could be important."
Violet's eyes were glossy withe unshed tears and she pulled away from Rennan to look down at her bloodstained hand. "It happens every time I have that dream, all of the injuries I get in that dream I get in real life. When I die in the dream I just wake up with all of the injuries I had before dying." Rennan looked at Violet incredulously and pushed her back down on the bed. "What are you doing!" Violet squirmed away from Rennan as his hands crept under her shirt, slowly pushing it up her torso.
His hands were warm against her skin and stilled as they found what he had been hoping he wouldn't see. Dark bruises decorated Violet's skin and she drew in a gasp as Rennan's fingers brushed over her ribs. Beneath the bruises, Rennan could see evidence of old injuries in the form of scars and fading bruises.
"Violet" Rennan looked at her seriously, "do these dreams happen often." Violet pushed his hands away from her and nodded wordlessly. "How often does this happen?"
Rennan gestured to her body and she shrugged, "Nearly every month, normally more."
Rennan sighed and stood up from the bed, "Damn," his hand came up to his head to massage his temples, "Stay right here, I'm going to go call someone and tell them to hurry up." Rennan walked out of the room and Violet collapsed back onto the bed with a sigh. Only she would be able to screw up getting rid of her curse, nothing could ever go right with her around.
Violet pushed her thoughts away as she heard Rennan's footsteps again. He entered the room with a grin on his face, "I called someone and they'll be here soon." She nodded her head wordlessly and Rennan's smile dropped from his face, "I'll make breakfast, come down with me." He walked over to Violet and grabbed her hand, gently pulling her off of the bed and down the stairs.
Violet let herself be gently pushed onto the couch, "Wait here." Violet sat on the couch for a minute before standing up and walking into the kitchen. Rennan was sifting through her refrigerator when she walked in and looked over at her as she came through the doorway.
"Do you need something?"
Violet shook her head, "I need to go on with my day like I normally do, I have work in an hour." She reached past Rennan and grabbed a carton of eggs out of the fridge. She toasted some bread as she cooked her egg and finished her breakfast with some fruit. Rennan watched her move around the kitchen, to anyone else she would seem fine, but he could see her wince every so often and how she would move slower than she had been the night before.
Violet was cracking a second egg into the pan when Rennan moved and tugged her away from the stove. "Go sit down. I can make my own damn breakfast."
Violet scoffed and pushed herself back in front of the stove, "And I can make you some breakfast, it isn't that difficult."
He scoffed, "every time you move you hurt yourself in some way. Injuries like yours don't just go away in the blink of an eye." Violet's attention snapped from the cooking egg to Rennan's burning gaze in an instant. Her eyes were cold and steely as they met his, surprising him with their intensity.
"You're right," she gestured at her ribs, "These don't just go away in a few seconds, they stay with me for weeks, sometimes even months if they're really nasty. I've had injuries exactly like these hundreds of times before you came around, so don't even think of telling me what to do when I've been getting along perfectly fine without you trying to control my every move!" Violet left the kitchen hurriedly, her hair whipping through the air as she turned around, "And you can make your own damn breakfast now!"
Rennan watched her leave in shock, surprised that the little mouse that had summoned him had that much fire in her. He grinned as he turned to the now slightly burnt egg still cooking on the stove, scraping the remains into the trash and easily cracking a new one in the pan. He was going to have fun with this one.
