It has been a few months since the siblings last saw each other and all the daleks woke up. The Doctor has been in a cage, no sonic screwdriver or anything to help him escape. Was he planning an escape or was it in the making? No one cared, really.
Ashley was in worse conditions than the Doctor. She was being tortured to tell the Doctor's name, which she planned not to tell. That made it hard for the daleks, they tried everything, but nothing seemed to work. The daleks were a ruthless race, but they were ready to give up. So, they uncuffed her from the steel flat bed and took her to be put in a cage.
She wore plain white pants and shirt, like it was some sort of jail. They were going to have to pass the Doctor's cage in order to get to hers. What they didn't know was something was going to happen in seconds that would change everything. They walked past the Doctor and suddenly the Doctor was out of his cage, running away with Ashley.
Rewinding back to the torture room. When Ashley was uncuffed, she had quickly grabbed the Doctor's and her sonic screwdrivers. She put them in her pockets. Fast forward to when they were passing the Doctor. She threw the Doctor his screwdriver while the daleks weren't looking. The Doctor unlocked his cage with the screwdriver, took Ashley's hand, and started running.
You could say they almost escaped.
