Where the heck is he? you thought, staring at your phone in frustration. You'd sent what felt like a hundred texts, and all of them went unanswered.
Lately, your boyfriend, Y/bf, had been acting...off. Baggy clothes replaced his usual style, his texts were short and distant, and he'd become oddly possessive. This wasn't the Y/bf you knew, and the knot of unease in your chest tightened with every passing hour. You tried calling him again. Straight to voicemail.
"That's it," you muttered under your breath, grabbing your jacket. "I'm going over there."
Y/bf's mom opened the door with her usual warm smile. "Oh, Y/n! It's good to see you. How are you, sweetheart?"
"I'm okay. Is Y/bf home?"
"Yes, he's in his room. I was just heading out, so go ahead. You know the way." She gave you a quick hug before stepping out, leaving the door open for you.
"Thanks, Mrs. [Y/bf's last name]," you called, already climbing the stairs.
At his door, you hesitated for a moment, then knocked softly.
"Y/bf? It's me. Can I come in?" There was silence. For a second, you thought he might ignore you again, but then you heard a faint click as the door unlocked. Slowly, it opened. Y/bf stood there, shoulders slumped, his eyes pink and puffy.
"Y/bf, what's wrong?" you asked gently, opening your arms.
He hesitated, then stepped into your embrace. "It's nothing. Stupid stuff," he mumbled, his voice barely audible.
You pulled back slightly, looking up at him. "It's not stupid if it's making you feel this way. Please, tell me."
Sighing, he shuffled to his bed and sat down heavily. You followed, sitting beside him, close enough that your knees touched. "Talk to me," you urged softly.
For a long moment, he stared at the floor. Finally, his voice cracked as he spoke. "Why are you even with me?"
Your heart clenched. "What do you mean? Why wouldn't I be with you?"
"I mean...look at me." He gestured vaguely at himself, tears spilling over as he continued. "I'm overweight. I'm not good-looking. Not like other guys. I just...don't get why you'd want to be with someone like me."
The vulnerability in his voice broke your heart. You took a deep breath, steadying yourself. "Stand up," you said firmly.
He blinked, confused. "What?"
"Stand up," you repeated, this time tugging gently at his hand.
Reluctantly, he stood. You led him to the full-length mirror on the wall, standing beside him. "Okay," you said, meeting his gaze in the reflection. "You want to know what I see?"
He shrugged, staring at his feet.
"I see the most beautiful boy I've ever met. *My* boy. I see someone with the kind of eyes that make the world stop, the sweetest smile, and honestly—fantastic hair."
His face turned a deep shade of pink, but you weren't done. "And your body? Don't even get me started. Lift your shirt."
"What? No," he said, crossing his arms defensively.
"Come on," you teased, nudging his shoulder. "Don't be dramatic. Just do it."
He let out a reluctant chuckle but finally gave in, lifting his shirt halfway.
"Wow," you said, tilting your head as if to examine him. "See? Perfect. Not a flaw in sight."
He started to protest, but you cut him off, stepping in front of the mirror and looking at yourself. "Now, you want to know what else I see? I see a girl who is so ridiculously lucky. A girl whose heart beats for you. Who smiles brightest when she's with you."
Tears welled up in his eyes again, but this time, they were different—softer. He pulled you into his arms, holding you tightly. "I love you," he whispered, his voice trembling. "I love you so much. Thank you for...for always knowing what to say."
You smiled against his chest. "I love you too. More than you could ever know."
For a moment, the two of you stayed like that, wrapped up in each other. Then, he let out a quiet laugh. "Okay, okay. Let's not turn this into a rom-com or anything."
You laughed too, wiping away his tears. "Deal. But only if you stop being so hard on yourself."
The rest of the day passed in a haze of warmth and quiet smiles. Whatever weight he'd been carrying seemed a little lighter now, and for that, you were grateful.
