Ivy and ferns grew through the crevices of the old winding stone path, which led directly to the colossal structure. The mansion loomed proudly behind creaky iron gates, flanked by rows of skeletal trees crowned in crimson, swaying gently in the chilly autumn wind. At its threshold stood the delicate marble fountain, the soft gurgling of the clear water melodic as it resonated in the surrounding silence.
"I'll gather them," Remy said as she left Zane's side to find the others.
The Great Hall served as the perfect setting for official pack business. The ceiling must be twenty feet high. Designs of fruit and flowers are carved into the molding and small, fat children with wings look down at us from every angle. Vases of blossoms give off a cloying scent that made Remy's eyes itch. Zane and Remy exchanged a few words as the pack flowed into the great space. Zane turned to the gathering of people and gave out a growl and with that, the room fell silent and moved in to hear what their Alpha had to tell them.
"As you all know one of our own was ambushed outside of the campus parameters. We have identified the attackers to be the west clan vamps lead by Victor Thorwald," she said very clearly with no dominance in it. Every member looked at her eager for more.
"Thankfully, Zero wasn't in bad shape and has healed from her wounds," Zane shouted.
A applause went out for Zero wellbeing. A few betas took notice that Zero wasn't in attendance. Nevertheless, their attention moved back to their alpha.
"The higher-ups have given me two options; fight or forgiveness. I've spent many nights thinking on this matter. And, I know some of you do not recognize the vamps under our protect because they are nor living or dead. But, that is not why I called this meeting today." Zane clarified, "The vamps need to be dealt with a civil manner. We don't have the luxury of the shadows anymore. And, we can not bring unwanted attention to us. That's why I've decided to let this one go for now. I will be putting together a team to accompany me in the negotiations with the vamps. All the rest of you, stand down, resume your lives, but keep a vigilant eye."
"Yes, alpha!" Everyone yelled in unison.
"Now, for unofficial business, our mating season will begin in a matter of days. Any mating offers will need to brought to me first out of respect. The Dred Chaos den is currently vacant so a den mother will be signed to help first-timers. Once, the den is full there will be no late entries. An overpopulation will invoke pack laws those unable to care for their young will send them off to the Blood Trails to be cared for and eventually tested." Zane shouted.
Remy looked out at the many faces to make up Dred Chaos. They didn't return that glance. At the wakening of Remy punishment talks of her demotion spread like wildfire, and yet she remained second to the Zane.
"Patrolling will be suspended for now. Our new alias, Lost Breed lead by Tamsin will be resuming responsibility for patrols. And, yes they are a pack of wolves. In the past, hellhounds have avoided working with wolves though Lost Breed hasn't given us a reason to mistrust them. So, watch each other out there. They are our alias now." Zane said as she looked them all in the eyes individually.
