#4 prompt
Mae walked frustrated into her room and tossed a bundle of letters on her bed. "Why couldn't he just forget he had a daughter" she slumped in her desk chair. She started on her Algebra homework, but she kept eyeing the stack of envelopes on her bed. It was like they were whispering to her.
She couldn't take it anymore, Mae sat on her bed, her delicate fingers traced the edges of the paper. She tore at the envelope, pulling the rough parchment out.
Dear Maebelle,
I know you don't write back because your mad, you might not even read them. It gets lonely here in my cell. I would like some letters, but I can't force you to forgive me. I'm trying to be a better person, and a great dad, but 400 miles away it's kinda hard. I love you Maebelle, Happy Birthday Honey. I've given you a gift, just open the package.
Love always,
Your fatherMaebelle left the papers on her bed. She jumped to the next letter, aching for her father's words. They were like getting baptized. She finished reading all of the letter and moved on to the package. Her fingers trembled and her heart thumped in and out of her chest. She ripped the paper off the box, and lifted a book. She opened the book to the center, revealing a pop up of her dad and her, holding hands. She let out a sigh, she had forgiven him. She turned the pages, each one held a single memory of her dads. At the very back was the day she was born, and a note that said.
Happy 15th Birthday Maebelle, how big you've gotton since then. I love you.
Mae let out a crying sob and clutched the book to her chest as if she let it go she would let him go. Maebelle's mother came in, "Honey I'm home- are you crying?" She asked in confusion until she saw the layers of letters spread upon her bed. "I told you not to open them, it's his fault he is in that place!" Her mother growled.
"Mom he wants a second chance, I think we should give it to him!" Mae said.
"No! He doesn't deserve us Maebelle!" Her mother started to grab all of the letters without care. Maebelle saved some and held them to her heart. "Give them" her mother growled again "Maebelle now!" She yelled. Slowly Maebelle's hands drew from her chest and gave up the letters. He mother stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Maebelle couldn't understand, why? Why does she keep hating him, and doesn't give him a chance. Mae looked at the book again, for the thousandth time.
Later that night her mother came to check on her. Mae was asleep and the book was on her floor. Her mother pick it up and opened it. She couldn't take it anymore. With a loud groan, she tore and tore at the pages. Maebelle woke up to the yelling of her mother. "No! Mom please" she pleaded for her to stop, but she kept going tearing page after page out of its binding, and each page into smaller and smaller pieaces.
After she was finished she looked Maebelle in the eye and said "You don't need him, I'm saving you from a heart break." Then her mother left.
Maebelle could feel tears prickling at the corner of her eyes, as she held the ruble that was once beautiful art. An almost silent knock came from her bedroom. She looked up and saw her Grandma Addie who was now hobbling into her bed room. She sat on the bed, and tucked pieaces of Maebelle's long red hair behind her ear. She caressed her cheek, and kissed her. In her other hand was a simple present, one Maebelle thought she was never going to have. Her Grandmother uncurled her bony fingers to reveal a stamp. With silent joy Mae took it and started on a letter to her father.
Dear Daddy,
Thank you for the letters, I have read them. I love my present, it's so beautiful. To be honest I'm not ready to be 15 yet. Time rolls by when your not paying attention. Be good and get out soon, I'll be waiting.
Love Maebelle,
P.S I think your the best dad.As Maebelle drew her letter to a close she couldn't help being excited and thinking about her father's face when he finds out she wrote him back, and she couldn't wait for the next bundle of letters.
