Prompt #14

I sat waiting in the icecream parlor between, Surfs and Handy's Ware on the boardwalk. August was late as always, never on time for anything, maybe it didn't matter, I just wanted to get what I had to say out of the way. The sun was setting dipping into the warm ocean, like a toddler into a cookie jar. A light breeze from the open windows blew my blonde hair around. I tapped my blue nails on the old table, rehearsing over and over what I was going to say. I carved a heart into the old wood. The man behind the counter, started to close up I was running out of time and so was he, August my boyfriend. I needed to say it, it would lift a brick off my shoulders.

"You have about 5 minutes." The man said I nodded my head, and strained my neck to look farther down the boardwalk. He wasn't coming, the one day I needed him to come he wasn't going to. I grabbed my bag and walked out. It was getting colder the summer was over and I am going to leave. Not only this town but this state across the country. I heard fast heavy footing behind me.

"Diana!" August came crashing into me. We lost balance and went over the brown rope, down into the ocean.

When we surface I couldn't believe what had happened. My belongings floated in the water, anything else sank, quickly I searched for my phone. It was still in my pocket. I got out of the salted water and onto the sand. "Diana, I'm really sorry!" He helps me off the sand. "I didnt think I was going that fast" he chuckles his eyes trail down my body, to what is my see through blouse. Our clothes are full of sand, and we now smelled of fish. My hair was stringy and itchy. I slipped off my shoes and pulled my blouse off and threw it away, it was ruined, I put on my jacket which I took off before we made the plunge. We make our way back onto the boardwalk. I start walking fast equalling out with how mad I was. August stops in front of the icecream parlor, pulling me around by my arm to face him. "We can't do this anymore" I say bluntly my eyes threating to become waterfalls. He stares at me with a deafening look. "Us, August" I can feel my eyes start to fill up even more a tear slips down my cheek. I know that I need to do this.

"What? I don't understand is this because I was late?" I try to say that it wasn't the reason, but he interupped me with a hurt chuckled "Wow, Diana!" He laughed "I can not believe you I can not effing believe you, why are you leaving me leaving Coastland?"

"For college" I tried to make my self as tall as him, but 6'2 is a lot to square up to.

"Stay here go to CCC" he took my hands

"August my college is across the country" I yank my hand out of his "I'm not throwing a scholarship away, many women aren't allowed jobs in this field" he tries to beg I push him away.

"Stay here" he pleads as he comes closer.

"I have a full scholarship" I say as our heads touch. "Just let me leave" I beg for him to make this easier on me but I know August he won't.

"No, I won't, you're going to leave and I will let you but you'll be all butt hurt because I didn't come after you." He stands back. "Stay Diana" he comes back to me, "please" his breath fans against my face.

"No, I'm moving on" I look up into his warm eyes memorizing his face, every angle, every crevace. His jaw line, how a small scar from a stapler in freshman year made its mark on his face right above his lip.

"You think you're all chill and can keep shit together?" I stand up out of my seat, the boy across the class just smirked, it was the boy I had met yesterday, "Well you're falling apart, let me help" my hand lands on the bulky stapler and I feel my self control disperse as I release, it flys across the room in a twirling motion. August falls down holding his face which is a glowing red.

"Mrs. Love, office now!" The teacher screams

It sometimes made me smile, because I gave him the scar. Now it just made me sad now because I'm scaring him again, for life. August is my first love and I hope I was his. Summer is ending and the fall is taking its course, and the wheels of fate must keep spinning. He takes his hands and slowly traces the freckles on my face. He nods his head in acceptance, I'm leaving and he can't stop me and can't come with me. Cupping my face in his hands, and in the closing light of the icecream parlor between Surfs and Handy's Ware we kissed a silent goodbye.
