Prompt #21

I sit there staring. The heart shaped box with my name on it. The box almost screamed "Go to Formal with me!" This formal wasn't going to be like highschool prom. College was different it had to be different right? I breathed and reached for the box.

"Not like this" I pulled my hand away. "Why doesn't he ask me in person?" I turned around to the wall in my small dorm. Breathing in and out, I looked around to still see the heart shaped box, looming there like a ghost saying

Open me Sam, Open me Sam! Oooo!

I smiled and took the box in my hand. Johnny Pencoat, one of the cutest guys on campus. I traced the lid of the warm red box. What would I find? Chocolates? A cute hand written letter? A poem!? My mind buzzed and thought of everything that could be in this box.

Quickly I pushed it away. What if it's a joke? Maybe paint will splash in my face. The kind of paint that won't come off for weeks. What if it's empty, or has a mean note? I bit my lip. If I didn't open it, I would have to live with the fact that I didn't go to Formal with Johnny Pencoat. If I did open it I'd have to keep it away from my face. I looked at the box. The letters of Sam were on the box, but they had odd spacings, but to be honest the entire box looked thrown together last minute as if, he didn't want to go with me but I'm the last choice!?

I slid off my bed like a puddle. Why do I even try? He doesn't even talk to me. My thought were running wild like a long lost season of Naked and Afraid. My confidence is naked and I'm afraid. I decide to open the box. My hands shake with excitement.

Open the box away from my face. Inside there is a note, a poem and chocolates! I read the note.

Dear Salma,

"Dear Salma?" I slap my hand to my face I hadn't even considered the box not even being for me! I close the lid and set the heart shaped box on the bed. The first thing I thought wasn't evny or jealously it was,

Hawk you Johnny Pencoat.
