At the sound of the final bell on Friday, all of the football players went into the pavillion. Our game was in Hilton, which was only forty five minutes away.
“Hey queer!” Cody, one of the receivers screamed as he walked by me.
As I turned around to confront him, Dakota had already ran across the room lifting him by the neck.
“What did you say?” Dakota demanded.
“Nuhhh…. Nothing.” Cody gasped
Dakota was 6’3 and weighed around 195 pounds of absolute muscle, while Cody weighed 140 standing in at about 5’6. This matchup was completely unfair.
“Apologize!” Dakota yelled spitting in his face.
“Sorry!” Cody said as Dakota let him down.
As Cody’s feet hit the ground I ran out of the room. After running for ten yards I noticed Dakota was right on my heels.
“Everyone knows!” I whined in between tears.
“Hey,” he said. “Noone is going to be mean, things will be ok.”
“No it won’t! My parents will disown me!” I yelled.
“They might be upset at first, but they’ll come to the point to where they'll accept you.” He assured.
“Ok.” I said wiping off my eyes.
Forty-five minutes later i found myself exploding out of the tunnel with my teammates. As we approached to sideline the coaches told us that we would be returning the kick. After the kickoff i approached the field with the intent of a perfect season.
“Trips Left 89 snap, on one.” Kane barked.
“Break.” The linemen yelled with a clap.
My guy was small and clearly quick, his number was 51,Hilton is the only other undefeated team in our conference so i knew instantly this guy was good.
“Down, set, one!” Kane shouted
I came off the ball, however he juked around me and flew by me untouched. As I turned around the whistle blew. Kane shot a glance at me as he got off the ground.
“Dang it Johnson!” coach Sample screamed. “Load set, load set.” With that commandment Dakota and Jeffrey marched onto the field as tight ends.
“Load left 97 slam, on one!” Kane yelled still staring at me.
After the break I got down in my stance and shot a glance at Dakota who was looking at me. what if he had been the one who told everyone. I thought.
“Set, one!” Kane screamed catching me off guard.
Once again the #51 defensive end flew by me untouched taking Kane to the ground.
“Russell, get Johnson!” Coach Sample screamed.”Are you going to show up tonight?” he yelled as I walked off the field with my head down for the first time in my football career.
“Punt!” screamed one of the sideline coaches after another sack.
“What Happened?” Dakota said as he neared me on the sideline.
“Would you tell anyone my secret?” I asked
“Do you really think this is the place for that discussion?” he asked.
I raised an eyebrow still staring him to the eyes.
“No I didn't.” He loudly said running back onto the field.
The rest of the half went by slowly. The halftime score was 7-6, they were up. we would be kicking off at the beginning of the third quarter. Derek kicked a perfect onsides kick which bounced perfectly off of one of their players’ legs. In the time it took me to blink Jared had jumped onto the ball, recovering the fumble.
At the referee's whistle I took the field again.
“Over right, 332 base, on one.” Kane said. “Right over you Johnson.”
“Break.” I said doubtedly.
I lined up and took a look at 51 who had previously owned me last half.
“Down, set, one!” Kane screamed.
I took two steps forward as 51 tried he perfected spin move. In reaction I took two steps left to block his way around. As he went backwards I saw Kyle run for a touchdown.
“29,29 fake.” Caden the place kicker yelled in the huddle.
The ball was snapped and Caden picked it up and dropped back then lobbed the ball towards Cody. The ball bounced off of Cody’s face mask and right into my arms.
When I felt the ball I wrapped it up and dove forward completing the two point conversion.
“Good job.” Coach sample said as I jogged of the field.
The rest of the game went by very slowly. I was in the middle of hitting 51 when I heard the sound of the final gun.
“And your score is 14-7! Progressing the undefeated Jackson Timberwolves into the Playoffs being statistically best in the state With a perfect conference season!” Roared the speakers.
Back in the locker room, Kyle received a game ball however I left to before the second was given away.
