*Emery's POV*

Tomorrow was the day. The day I have been dreading for. The first day of school. Correction, the first day of hell. I've always loved school, but this year was different. Not only did I have to attend a school full of spoiled rich kids, I had to move from New York to LA because of my mom's new job offer which she took because it pays well. Her last job barely payed her enough to last the whole family a week, making me pick up an extra shift at the coffee shop I worked at. The only person who was happy to be back in LA was my sister, Olivia. Even though she is younger then me, she's also more social and can make friends easier. Being back in LA wasn't that bad. I got to reunite with Ethan, my best friend since childhood. I used to live in LA when I was a kid, but moved to New York, now I'm back and already hating it.

It was a Sunday morning, meaning tomorrow was Monday, school day. I barely got any sleep last night because I was up late unpacking all my stuff and helping Olivia. I woke up to the sound of my mom yelling from downstairs for me and Olivia to get up and eat breakfast. My plan for today was to go over to Ethan's house and catch up with him since we haven't talked for 4 years. I quickly got up, brushed my teeth, and went downstairs to the sight of my mother cooking pancakes and my sister already sat down at the kitchen counter.

"Morning." I said with a smile on my face because mother rarely makes pancakes for breakfast.

"Morning honey. Are you ready for school tomorrow?"

Before I could answer, Olivia chirped up from her seat. "Oh! I am! I can't wait to meet some new friends and join the cheer leading team."

My mother smiled at Olivia's response and turned around facing me, waiting for my response.

"Why are you so excited? That school is filled with spoiled kids who care only about themselves."

Olivia looked offended by my answer and mother gave me a look. Olivia kept on talking about how excited she was for tomorrow, but I completely spaced out. All I wanted was to go to school without anyone noticing me. I was a senior, meaning this was my last year of high school until college. Olivia was a junior and she wanted to know everyone in the school. I didn't even notice the pancakes in front of me until Olivia went up to her room to finish unpacking. Leaving me and my mother in the kitchen. It was silent while my mother cleaned the dishes and I noticed that she was wearing her work uniform.

"Are you heading to work today?" I asked while taking a bite of the pancakes.

"Yeah. I'll be working the night shift so I'll be home late. Make sure you and your sister get to bed early for school. And James is coming over tomorrow for dinner, so get home early."

Ugh James. He is my mother's boyfriend. My mom thinks he's some nice guy, but he's not. Whenever mother isn't around, James abuses me and Olivia. But whenever we tell her, she doesn't believe us.

So many thoughts were in my head that I was no longer hungry. So I decided to walk over to Ethan's house. Which was a 10 minute walk from my house. I handed my mom the plate full of pancakes and told her where I was going.

The walk to Ethan's house was peaceful. I've always liked walks because it helps me clear my mind. When I finally reached Ethan's house, I knocked on his front door and his mother opened it.

"Emery! It's so good seeing you again! It's been too long. Come in!"

I entered the house, talking my shoes off as Mrs. Allen gave me a big hug.

"I haven't seen you in 4 years! How was New York?"

I couldn't help but smile at Mrs. Allen's excitement. I always thought of her as a 2nd mom. "It's so nice to see you too Mrs. Allen. New York was great. I got a new camera for my birthday and started taking more pictures, just like I promised."
