I set the glass of water next to my brothers bed. He hasn't gotten up in almost a week. The Doctor said it was only a miner flu. I hope he gets over this soon. He needs to help grandfather and I in the fields. Plus, I hate to see him in this state. He's usually up working from dusk til dawn. Now he can't even lift up a glass of water or swallow a piece of bread without throwing it back up.
I help him sit up so he won't choke on the water. I hand him the glass and he takes a small sip. "I can't drink anymore, hurts too much." He holds out the glass so I can take it back. "Please Isaac, try to. You'll get weaker if you don't have something in your tummy."
He shakes his head. "No octie, I'll be fine, just let me rest so I can get back up and runnin' again." I take the glass and leave it by his bed side. He lays himself back down on his pillow. I shake my head. "Your stubborn ya know that?"
He manages to give me a small smile. My grandmother comes in the room. "How's he doing Octavia? " she places a wet rag on top of his forehead. "He took a little sip of the water, I couldn't get him to drink anymore though. I leaving the glass by his bed side in case he wants some later."
"Poor boy." She says. "At least he's trying. Emily and Anna are outside. They're waitin' for you. Emily is wantin' to take you both on a walk. To try and relax you. She knows how much you've been stressed about your brother." Emily and Anna are long time of mine and the family. Isaac and I have been playing with them since we were little. Seeing as Emily and Isaac are the oldest, my grandparents and Emily's parents have an arrangement to get the two married this fall. I've always had mixed feelings about it. Just my friend and my brother getting married always felt weird to me.
"Alright grandmother, to you need anything else before I leave?" She shakes her head, still looking down at Isaac. I know she's just as worried as I am about him. "Alright...well I'll be back later I suppose. I love you both." I say turning to leave the room. "Love you too Octavia." My grandmother calls back to me.
I walk out the front door of the house to see Emily and Anna waiting for me on the porch. Anna runs up to me and gives me a big hug. "Hey Octavia, we''ve been hearin' 'bout Isaac. I hope he's doin' okay." I smile and hug her back. Anna is four years younger than me and always have been sweet. Even though now she's in her teenage years.
"He's lookin' rough but don't worry, I believe he's gettin better." I say. Wishing I believed it myself. Anna lets go and steps off the porch, ready to leave for our walk. I turn to Emily. She's twenty three and one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen. She had strawberry blonde hair that she always kept tied back. Like mine it was long whenever she let it down. I was never of fan of my hair being long, but my grandmother makes me keep it long because it's more "lady like". She also had beautiful sky blue eyes that I always admired. Even now looking stressed about the health of her future husband, she looked lovely as a rose.
"So where do you plan on taking us em?" I ask. I try not to talk about Isaac right now. I can tell she's worried. She gives me a warm smile and says "well I was thinking we'd take a walk down to the creek and take a swim."
Later at the creek
Isaac is the one who showed Emily and Anna the creek. When we were down with our chores in the summer time, we'd go down there and swim until it got dark. It was Isaacs idea to show Emily the creek last year. I have to admit, it kind of upset me. Emily has never been a fan of our farm (or anything dirty in general ) and both the creek and farm are special to me. If she can't appreciate my home, she shouldn't be able to have fun in the place my brother and I claimed when we were younger.
"What are we going to do about our dresses?" I ask. Emily is not one to like to mess up her clothing. "Leave them on. We can wash them when we return home." She takes of her shoes and lets down her long blonde hair that almost glowed in the sun light. She places her shoes out of the way and runs and jumps into the water. Water splashes and hits me and Anna. I hear Anna giggle and follow her lead. I'm honestly surprised Emily jumped in the creek in her dressed.
I take off my shoes and place the next to Anna's and Emily's. I take my hair out of the pony I had it in,I feel it hit my back. I run feeling leafs and hickorys crunch under my feet. I jump, feeling the warm summer sun and air hit my face before falling into the cool creek water. I resurface to hear Anna giggling and splashing me and Emily with water.
Emily jumps on her and holds her so she can stop. Anna struggles and Emily eventually lets her go. "Meanie." Anna says. "Then don't splash people with water. No one wants it in their face." Emily says. She's never been fawn of how Energetic Anna can be sometimes.
"Hey I got an idea. Let's play truth or dare, Octavia your first." Emily says pointing to me. "What shall it be?" I hate playing this game with her. With Isaac its fun but last time we played it she made me eat meal worms. I roll my eyes. "Truth."
Emily grins "what's wrong Octie, you scared?" She doesn't see the fun in the truth part of the game unless it's a dare. If I fight her, she'll just make me do dare anyway. Might as well do what she wants. "Fine. Dare."
"Now that's more like it! I dare you to jump off that rock over there, into the water." She says pointing behind me. I turn around and look at what she was pointing at. The rock was big and castes a shadow on the water. It wasn't that high up, but it was high enough to were it'll hurt when you hit the water.
"I'm not sure Em..." i say. "Don't be a chicken it'll be fun." Anna joins her sister. "Yeah Octavia it'll be fun. Please do it?" She says trying her best to give me puppy eyes. I smile and start and swimming swimming towards the shore of the rock. I walk out onto the dirt and mud sticks to my feet. I make my way up to the rock and eventually reach the top.
It's hot from the sun. It kind of burns my feet. "Just so you know you both are gonna take dare for this!" I call down to them. Anna and Emily both clap and chant "jump". I step back looking down at the water. It looks so much higher from up here...
I push myself to jump off the rock. The air hits my face and it feels wonderful. I look down as my body hits the water. It stings my stomach as I sink into the water fast. I wait to hit the bottom so I can push myself up to the surface. But before I could hit the soft mud at the bottom, I hit my head my head on something hard. I can almost hear my own skull crack. I fade away from consciousness as the water around me turns black.
