Dyn Rodyne’s eyes glowed bluish white as he conducted the Essense through his soul. He poured it into his hands, snaking from his eyes to his palms, forming glowing balls of Heterochromic energy used to create magic. He then spun the thread of a fire spell, the energy ball changed from blue to red with a hiss, and then he pushed it into the lock on the huge oak door. He guided it with precision, melting the brass levers that held the door locked and pushed them to the bottom of the casing carefully. After he had succeeded in melting the pesky levers he extinguished his Essense, the glow fading from his eyes.

His boyish face lit up with a cheeky grin as he used a bit of wire to throw the locks bolt, unlocking the door at the back of the huge library. “Ryn?” Dyn called quietly.

Ryn’s moppy blonde head poked around the corner, her shoulder length curls bouncing with movement. “Have you got it open, Dyn?” she whispered.

Dyn nodded, his hair was the same blonde shade as his older sisters. Well, only older by a few minutes as they were twins. Ryn liked to bring that up whenever possible just to annoy Dyn and to try and boss him around, as if begin older gave her all the authority. He brushed his hair out of his eyes then adjusted the pointy cap on his head; the fabric was soft so the cap flopped down to the side lazily.

Dyn grabbed the door handle as Ryn stopped next to him.

“Dyn, we could get in a lot of trouble for this. The Lord Caster won’t be happy if he finds out, I hope you know that.” Ryn said seriously. One of her eyes shined a brilliant emerald while the other an aqua blue. As she was a Caster that meant she could use water and air Heterochromancy. She was very talented as a healer for a ten year old.

“Come on Ryn, we’re only kids. Besides, how much more trouble could we possibly get in?” His infectious grin split his face again, his eyes sparkling with mischievousness; one was bright amber while the other was a dark brown. That meant he could harness fire and earth Heterochromancy.

Ryn giggled with a hand over her mouth. Dyn knew his love for exploration rubbed off on Ryn. She was simply too curious and sharing blood with Dyn which, of course, meant sharing the Rodyne mischievous gene.

Dyn turned the big brass handle and pulled. The door creaked open a fraction but it was simply too heavy for him to open. Ryn slipped her fingers into the opening and helped Dyn pull. The door slowly opened and once there was a gap that was big enough for them to slip through, they darted in sniggering.

The room they entered was only lit by the gap in the door way but from what Dyn could tell they room was filled with book shelves absolutely packed with books.

“Dyn!”

The room shook as the door slammed shut and the bolt clicked metallically as it locked.

Dyn quickly ran back and jammed his wire back into the lock. He felt for the bolt but what he didn’t expect to find was the levers. They were back somehow. But I melted the levers… Stars, I can hardly see…

Dyn opened himself up to his Essense once more. He focused his fire Heterochromancy through his left eye, the one that shined amber. Energy flowed from his eye to his hand again, then, with the right movement from his fingers, it turned to fire, lighting the room around them. After he had cast fire he felt his Essense stores dwindle as they were used. A Caster could only store a limited amount of Essense in his body; only with the aid of Essense-gems could they increase the maximum amount of Essense they could cast. One could simply rest for their Essense to restore naturally or in moments of need, battle for example; one could drink an Essense potion and restore it instantly.

He saw the Essence-gems hanging on stalactite pillars all around the room so he conducted his fire into one. The Essence-gem lit up, brightening the room in a light similar to a hearth fire. Once one Essence-gem was lit up, Dyn’s fire jumped to another Essence-gem, then another, until the whole room was lit up with the warm glow.
