"Hey, Evans! Watson! Wait up a moment!" Potter and Black called. We were just heading out onto the grounds, so we paused to let them catch up.

"Do you want to come over for a few weeks this summer?" Potter asked. "My parents really want to meet both of you."

"Sure," Lily agreed slowly.

"I don't know if my grandparents will let me," I murmured. Sirius wrapped his arm around my shoulder and steered me away from the other two.

"Why do you stay with them?" he questioned softly. "They aren't doing any good for you."

"Where would I go?" I returned. "Lily already has enough trouble at home with her sister and they're all muggles. Alice doesn't have room in her house. Marlene can't either. They've got a new baby on the way and I'd just be added stress they don't need. There's no one, Sirius. No one."

"James' parents have offered to take me in if I ever need it," he stated. "I doubt they'd mind another head. Mrs. Potter would love a girl, I know."

"But they've already got you," I denied. "I don't want to be a burden." Sirius sighed.

"Just ask your grandparents," he told me. "They might be glad to be rid of you for a few weeks."

"Or they might want me under their watch constantly," I replied.

"You gotta think positive," he chided. "Or you aren't going to get anywhere." The two of us walked on in silence.

"Why do you hide this side of you?" I asked suddenly.

"Huh?"

"This side that's caring and smart and wise and kind," I explained, struggling to find the words that described him like this.

"You know why," he muttered. "You do it too."

"I hate them," I growled viciously. "I hate them all."

"So run away with me," Sirius suggested. "We'll make our own life, away from their wretched influence." I laughed then.

"Tell you what, I'll visit the Potters this summer," I promised. "Then we'll see what happens."

My grandparents practically tossed me out the door. I was allowed to stay for as long as I liked as long as they received no ill report of my behavior. I arrived at the Potters the same day James told me they could have me.

"Sirius isn't coming until tomorrow morning," James informed me as I followed him inside his house. "Lily hasn't said when she'll come yet."

"She better not back out," I threatened. "I'll beat her to a pulp if she leaves me here with just you boys." James laughed and wrapped his arm around my shoulder.

"She'll come, don't worry."

"Who's this James?" a woman asked. "Is this Lily? That girl you're always talking about."

"Muuuum," he grumbled, blushing hard. "This is Lily's best friend, Kendra."

"Not the Kendra that Sirius loves?" she commented. My arms crossed and I grabbed fistfulls of my shirt.

"The very same," James returned, his smirk growing on his still red face. I smacked his arm in revenge.

"Let me show you where you'll be staying," Mrs. Potter offered. "Then you and James can hang out until dinner." I followed Mrs. Potter up a flight of stairs and a bit down a hallway. She opened up one of the doors and followed me inside.

It was decorated in red and white with a large bed set up in one corner and a four drawer dresser next to the closet. There was another door which I assumed led to a bathroom. It already had some shelves, white against the red walls, with a few books on them.
