It's third year now and I've gotten permission from Macusa to become an Animagus. Mrs. Sally was the worker who'd come to observe and make sure I didn't hurt myself. Only one other person my age had tried, but they had succeeded. School was a little hard to balance with the process, but I ended up passing my classes and becoming an Animagus. I could turn myself into a bernese mountain dog.
"Sorry to bother you, Mr. Landon," Ms. Daryl started, standing just inside the door. "May I borrow Ms. Watson for a few minutes?"
"Sure," he agreed. I gathered my things as Ms. Daryl instructed and followed her to the Headmaster's office. I hadn't done anything this time! Why did they have to bring me out of the middle of class? Was it because I was an Animagus? Did I not fill in some paperwork?
"Miss Watson, your father is Mr. Kyle Watson, correct?" the Headmaster clarified. I nodded confirmation. "Then I regret to inform you," what? "that your father," no, "was walking on the sidewalk," that's normal, "when he was hit by a truck." My eyes widened.
"No," I barely breathed. It couldn't be true.
"He was admitted to the no-maj hospital Thursday of the week before last," he continued. Two weeks ago he'd been admitted. "We just received word of this occurrence. I am very sorry Kendra."
"We are concerned that if we send you to see him, you would miss the year finals and have to redo the entire year," Ms. Daryl stated. "The choice is entirely up to you."
"He's survived two weeks already," I mused, trying to make sense out of my muddled thoughts. "He'll probably make it through the last couple days of finals. I'll stay. But just until after my last test."
"We can arrange that for you," Ms. Daryl agreed. "I'll take you back to class if you're up for it. Or we can just go to the rooms for the rest of the day."
"I can go to class I think." She led me back to Mr. Landon's classroom. I refused to say a word to any of my classmates, and hardly payed attention to the rest of the lecture. All I had left were my charms and potions tests. Ms. Daryl helped me pack up my things and get them down to the carriage. The pair of us rode away from the school.
"The Headmaster arranged for a portkey to be used to get you to the hospital," she explained. "Just grab a hold of this." The two of us stood there for a minute before something yanked me from inside my nose and the world started spinning. Once that stopped, I looked around and saw that we were in a deserted field. Ms. Daryl magicked my stuff back to my house. She led me down a path and we soon emerged onto a busy road. She planned on walking down to the hospital.
I hailed a cab. I had money in my pocket. Ms. Daryl had some money too apparently because she paid when we arrived. The front desk led me up to my dad while Ms. Daryl dealt with the finances.
"Daddy!" I cried upon entering.
"Hey sweetie," I heard a soft reply. "Don't you have a couple more weeks of school?"
"I took all my finals," I assured him. "They let me come home early." I heard the heart rate monitor slow down slightly.
"Good. I love you, my sweet child," he whispered.
"I love you too, Daddy," I replied. He exhaled and the heart monitor gave a steady stream of sound. "Daddy?" Doctors rushed into the room. "Daddy! Daddy! No! No! Daddy! Please!" A nurse dragged me out of the room and held me tight as they tried to start his heart again. I struggled to get to my dad for a while until finally accepting that I had just watched him die. I broke down sobbing.
The rest of the day and the days after that went by in a blur. Rena, Maddie, and Ally showed up to the funeral. I managed to sing a song I'd made for him at the funeral. The wizard who'd been assigned to find me a place to live, Mr. Rotuck, dealt with most of the legal stuff I had to do. I was 13 for crying out loud. And now I'm an orphan.
"Kendra?" Mr. Rotuck started. "Your maternal grandparents are alive, but they live in London, England. They have agreed to take care of you until you're an adult."
"Don't I have family in America?" I asked.
"Your father had no siblings and his parents have already passed," Mr. Rotuck explained. "Your mother's parents are the closest living relative we could find."
"Alright," I sighed. "Will I stay at Ilvermorny?"
"Probably not," he sighed. "You'd transfer to Hogwarts." I left for my grandparents a week later, after tearful goodbyes from my three best friends. I promised to write to them once I got there. My grandparents were waiting on the pier holding a sign with my name. The nice couple who'd been in charge of me on the boat made sure I left with them safely.
My grandfather apparated with me on his arm. My grandmother followed suit. We appeared in front of a huge mansion. Just the outside lawn was covered in fancy topiaries and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a pool or a pond in the backyard.
"You live here?" I muttered in awe. "It's amazing!" My grandfather explained a couple of the basic rules of his house. I was introduced to their house elves, Dreny and Milly. They were very into the Pureblood supremacy way of thinking. I thought that was stupid because there really was no difference between those who came from magical blood and those who came from no-maj blood. It made no difference. I'd learned that I was actually a Pureblood myself, since Dad had been from an American Pureblood family.
They left me alone to get settled into my new room. It was huge but mostly bare. I unpacked my stuff myself. Grandmother pulled me aside the next morning after breakfast.
"Your grandfather is a very busy, but successful man in the wizarding community here," she stated. "We've worked up to our good reputation and simply won't stand to be related to any street rat." I flinched. She thought of me as a street rat. "We've hired a tutor for you that will come in weekdays to train you in how to be a proper lady. You will be tutored until I deem you fit enough." I nodded acceptance, afraid of what snark might lead to.
