I was thankful for when school started up. It was bound to be much better than my grandparents house. Oh the mansion was fun to explore, except when I accidentally went somewhere I wasn't supposed to go. Those were never good days. And without the constant playing and fighting with my no-maj friends, my muscles were weakening.
Grandmother dropped me off at the platform I needed, via apparation. She made a show of saying goodbye to me and I followed her lead. Once she let me onto the train, I quickly found an empty compartment on the train that would take everyone to school. Hopefully no one would bother me and I'd make it there in one piece.
That was not to be.
Four boys barged into my compartment, laughing outrageously. They all jerked to a stop when they noticed I was there. The first boy was fairly tall and thin with ragged brown hair and scars covering his skin. The next had longish messy black hair and square rimmed glasses with the most inquisitive look on his face. The third had mousy brown hair and a soft round face. He looked like he was in the presence of his greatest heroes. The fourth- oh. That's Sirius Black.
"This is our compartment," the one with the glasses stated.
"Oh I'm sorry," I replied sarcastically. "I didn't see your stuff claiming a space on the racks." I gestured up to where my stuff was securely on a rack.
"Rude," Sirius claimed.
"Always," I replied with a sneer. "Now either let me stay and just freaking sit down, or go find a different compartment."
"We will not find a different compartment," glasses boy refused petulantly. "And you will not like staying in the same compartment as us. You see there isn't enough room."
"Wait, Kendra?" Sirius clarified.
"Yup, I'll leave." I stood and took my stuff, heading out the door.
"Wait no, Kendra!" Sirius called. "I want you to meet my friends!"
"I'm good, thanks," I replied. I turned away again but he pulled me to a stop.
"You were so nice at the party," he pushed. "Why so rude now?"
"Cause I'm always like this," I explained like he was five. "Only reason I was nice at the party was because my grandparents were watching. Let go of me or I will punch you harder than I punched Malfoy." Sirius let go and backed away.
"You'll learn to love me," Sirius called. "They always do!"
"In your dreams, Black," I yelled back.
"The Marauders infuriate you too?" someone asked.
"The who?" A girl who looked a couple years older than me was looking at me through a compartment door.
"Black and Potter and them," she explained. "Potter is always trying to ask me out. They're psycho." I laughed, agreeing with her.
"Just kicked me out of their compartment," I told her. "Even though they hadn't claimed it in any way before I got there. Black was annoying me to no end."
"Come sit with me and Severus," the girl offered. "It's just the two of us in here."
"Alright," I shrugged, entering the compartment. I hefted my stuff onto the rack. "I'm Kendra Watson."
"Lily Evans and he's Severus Snape." The boy with grease filled hair waved his hand towards me.
"So what year are you?" Severus asked.
"I'm sorry?"
"What year are you? Second, third?"
"Fourth actually, I think."
"Same as us!" Lily cheered. "How come we've never met before? You're robes say Gryffindor."
"I'm a transfer from America," I replied.
"No one transfers schools," Severus stated. "Permissions to start at different schools, like Beauxbaton or Durmstrang, is one thing, but coming into a different school in the middle of learning? Unheard of."
"It's not if your parents die and your next closest relatives live in England," I retorted viciously. I knew he didn't deserve my anger. But I couldn't hold it back. Lily gasped, I guessed at the news rather than the severity with which I had said it. The three of us didn't talk through the rest of the ride. Severus left our compartment to let us change into the uniform.
"Lily?" I started. She made a sound of acknowledgement. "Is it alright if I stay with you? Just until I figure out where things are around here. I just - don't want to be lost all the time through my first few days here."
"Of course, Kendra," she laughed. "I can even introduce you to a few people, if you want."
"Thank you," I breathed. I followed Lily off the train when we stopped. She led me to some carriages pulled by dark, bony creatures. No one but me seemed to notice them.
"You can see them too?" a girl asked as she climbed into our carriage. Her robes were lined in blue, so not in my house. Her wavy brunette hair was cropped to her chin and her brown eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"I've always been able to," I replied.
"What are they?" she queried.
"Thestrals," I answered.
"What are you two talking about?" Lily asked. "I don't see anything."
"Thestrals," I said again. "They pull the carriages. Only those who've seen death can see them. That's often why they're seen as omens of bad luck, when they're actually really smart."
"I never knew," both girls muttered.
"Who did you see die?" I asked the stranger. "If it's not too much to ask."
"My aunt, two years ago," she answered shyly.
"My mom when I was ten," I told her. "She drank too much. Liver failure."
"Must've been rough," Lily sympathized, "to lose your mother like that."
"Don't feel sorry for me. I don't need your pity," I growled.
"I just want to be you friend,-" the stranger paused, clearly wanting me to fill in my name.
"Kendra," Lily supplied when I stayed silent.
"Kendra," the stranger repeated. A fourth girl clambered into our carriage, with her light brown bangs covering her eyes.
"Sorry, there's no other carriage left," she apologized, swiping her bangs to the side. Her yellow robes made her out to be a different house than the rest of us. The carriage finally started moving.
"No need to apologize," the blue robed girl replied. "I'm Hannah."
"I'm Teresa," the new girl stated.
"I'm Lily and this is Kendra," Lily introduced for me.
"Not the Lily Evans?" Hannah asked. "The one Potter is always asking out?"
"Unfortunately, yes. The Lily Evans."
"Wow. Must be really bad if the whole school
knows about it," I muttered, impressed with Potter's dedication."Ya think?" Lily returned, causing the other girls to laugh.
