A/N:

Hi guys! So glad you guys chose to give The Gifted a chance!  I've received mixed feedback about this prologue. I will admit, it's a little "info-dumpy" but I promise this is the only chapter that is! I plan to go back tweak this once I'm done with the rest of the story.  So please give it a chance.

But if you have any tips or anything just leave me a comment! I do listen to them! Thanks and I hope you enjoy!

Water.

The most vital and powerful element on earth. It brings both life and destruction. It can change form, cut stone, and give energy.

My name is Evelyn Blake Montier and water is both my gift and curse.

Growing up, I remember watching my younger brother and sister struggle with their gifts. Clara's gift is relatively simple, she can learn any language fluently. It manifested when my parent's assigned us a new tutor that originated from another country. Clara overheard him talking to a diplomat in their language at one of our parent's annual parties and that was that she was fluent by the end of the month. Afterward, many more tutors were brought in specifically to teach her as many languages as possible.

Aiden was different. He was something the general population called a Militant. Although aggressive, he could pick up any weapon and use it with deadly accuracy. He found his gift when father took him on his first hunt. At first, father thought it was merely a lucky shot, but after two deer, four rabbits, and a boar he changed his mind.

Water is my gift, but it presented itself abnormally late. At first, I just really loved the water. It started with child tantrums of wanting to stay in the bath longer. Then, as I grew, I would go to the lake near my house and disappear for hours. I couldn't stay away from it. I wanted to be in it, surrounded by it. It was my comfort. I felt at peace when I was in it as if all my stress washed away.

I thought my father was going to have a heart attack when I told him I did not wish to serve the royal family and instead wanted to be at sea. My family has a long history of serving the royal family. Our bloodline is a strong one, giving way to many powerful Gifted that helped build the King's empire. For this tradition to falter due to my wishes was unacceptable to my father. Gifted or not, I would not shame the Montier name by becoming a fisherman. No, according to him, my destiny was to serve as a lady-in-waiting. I would get into the royal court, find a suitable partner that my father agreed upon, and live the rest of my days conceiving heirs to some noble.

But I believed I could change my destiny.

A week after officially being introduced to the royal court, there was an accident. I hate the royal court for a reason. It's filled with nothing but jealous, competitive women. They act as if we're in a race to pin down the most expensive bachelor in the room, and to some point, they're not wrong. That was my father's goal for me. That was the goal for many women of nobility. But that was not my goal.

Due to my family history, my last name is known throughout the court and many men want me for my bloodline alone. Because of that, all the women in the court either ignore me or hate me, the latter being the main problem. One evening, there was a tea in the palace gardens for the ladies of the court. Naturally, my father expected me to attend, so I did. It was the wrong choice.

I should have played sick that day. Or ran away and hid at the lake like I used to do, but instead I played the part of the good daughter and attended. Being a ladies tea, no men were in the garden except for the standard palace guards. It was the perfect opportunity to try and intimidate the competition. Something my enemies of the court took full advantage of.
