Guards poured from the crowd, slowly encircling both Evelyn and I. Not taking my eyes off of Kane and Councilman Ulra, I grabbed Evelyn's arm and forced her behind me. Without argument, I felt her turn around and place her back against my own to face the guards flanking us, trusting me with the ones in front. The warmth of her back against mine somewhat calmed my enraged thoughts, but not enough to suppress everything.

I looked to Councilman Ulra, "Evelyn has been under my watch during her entire stay here. Even if she wanted to betray us, she wouldn't have the chance. Not without my knowing. Or do you question my loyalty as well?"

Rather than answering me, the councilman looked at Kane and waved his hand forward, gesturing for him to speak. Kane stepped past the line of guards, his brown hair freshly cut and his face just shaven, as if he'd prepared for this to occur in front of a crowd. Hell, he probably did.

Kane slowly turned in place, the growing crowd's attention going directly to him. I waited, on pins and needles, to hear the lies that I knew would come from his mouth. It was no secret that he didn't like Evelyn and we had prepared for something to happen but not this. We never anticipated this amount of backlash.

Whatever. It doesn't matter. I'm confident I can negate anything they throw at us.

As if reading my thoughts, Kane turned to me, hands clasped casually behind his back, and smirks. However, instead of conversing with me, Kane casts a hand out and addresses the crowd, conducting this like a trial. "I recently went on a mission with these two individuals and while our dearly loved team captain, Flint, may not be a traitor, I assure you, the girl behind him is. While the captain was dealing with other matters I saw her sneak away to a back room. I followed, keeping my distance, and you can imagine my surprise when I see her conversing with the King's Captain of the Guard! Conspiring with one the King's commander!"

There was an immediate response of whispers and harsh glances from the crowd and I felt Evelyn tense behind me. I let out a breath of my own. So this was his play. But how did he come by that information? Kane had met us at the rendezvous point. He couldn't have seen Evelyn with the Captain. If he did, he would have added my name to the King's list of spies. Only the council knew the details of her meeting. I had made sure of that. Which left only one option.

Ulra, you snake. What are you getting out of this?

While Kane was busy with the crowd, my eyes scanned the people until they landed on the older face of Sir Devon. His once kind features were twisted into concern. We locked eyes and I nodded my head slightly. He nodded in return, understanding the signal, and quickly ran back through the crowd, disappearing from sight. He was our only hope.
