Chapter One - New name and bad first impressions
"We do not remember days, we remember moments" - Ceasare Pavese
Mackenzie looked around the strange room in the same way she had in the last two and a half months observing the strange, impersonal and rather lifeless feeling that the whole room had. While the room was nice, beautiful even; decorated by an interior designer that her aunt had hired and sparing no expense on making the room just as perfect as her aunt wished it to be. Crisp white walls black furniture and a large floor-length mirror inside the rather well stocked walk-in closet decorated the rather hallow room but glancing around the only thought that crossed Mackenzie's mind was how "it's not my room."
Her room was smaller the corner bedroom in her family's small but comfortable home. Her room hadn't had all the walk-in-closet or floor length windows, but her single poster bed with walls decorated with photobooth strips with her friends and band posters had always been enough. Her heart arced with longing, wanting to travel back into time, to her small family in their beautiful home. A life that had been irreparably changed that day of the accident.
It was the first day of the new school year, and Mackenzie looked at the outfit she had set aside the night before. What now seemed like a lifetime ago she remembered enthusiastically shopping with her mom for new clothing. they had made a whole day of it stopping for cinabon in the food court before continuing on. The outfit she would wear today, a white blouse with dark blue ripped jeans had been bought that day. She allowed herself a moment of fantasy thinking about what the first day of school would have been like. Her mom would have made a ridiculously large breakfast as she did every year making the eggs and bacon into smiley faces for both her and her brother. Her mom would have fussed with her hair before insisting that they take pictures for the first day of school. Her mother loved photos and had their school photos posted on the mantle every year.
She could almost hear her mother reminding her to strand up straight and that confidence was almost all about presentation.
Mackenzie glanced up into the mirror, her soft auburn hair fell down her back in waves. Foreign blue eyes stared back at her, deep purple coloured underneath them a result of several nights lacking sleep.
"Mackenzie" her aunt called from downstairs. Mackenzie straightened her top, adding some concealer to hide the purple tinge under her eyes. Taking a deep breath she prepared herself, she would be fine, this could be a good thing, new friends, a new start where no one knew.
Her aunt called again impatiently from downstairs. Mackenzie rushed down the spiralling staircase taking two at a time, arriving out of breath in front of her aunt a few seconds later. "Be careful, you mustn't ruin your outfit or anything like that, you only get one first impression so you better make sure it's a good one" Mackenzie nodded to her aunt in what seemed to be agreement but the second her aunt's back turned she rolled her eyes. Her aunt meant well but Mackenzie found her too concerned in others opinions and needing perfection. There were more important things to worry about.
"Mackenzie!" Her aunt called from outside annoyance evident in her voice, Mackenzie quickly got in the car preparing for a car ride of her aunt talking to a client on her hands-free phone while she stared out the window praying for the day she got her own car. It was in that car ride that Mackenzie resolved to be different, she decided to embrace the things that made her different.
