as i'm obsessed with gravity falls, i felt it necessary to make an au about it. the plot is inspired by the first episode. but honestly, jared would make a better mabel.

The door to the Mystery Shack swung closed behind me as I stepped out into the forest. In my good arm I carried wood signs pointing in the direction of the tourist trap, a hammer, and nails to pound them in. I almost felt bad for the trees, having to suffer as I forced their dead companions into their bark, or snapping a limb as I let g- I mean fall from them.

Yes, I fell from a tree. How stupid. That was how I wound up with this cast on my arm.

I was barely into the forest when I felt a sense of... being watched. This wasn't my normal anxiety. I could tell. This felt more... real.

I attempted to shake it off as I pounded a sign into the tree, secretly feeling guilty about it.

What can I say, I love trees? They're part of the reason I came out here to the little town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. My mom thought it would be "great for your tree passions, instead of our urban hometown". There was also something about the fresh air, seeing some family, and maybe something about helping my social anxiety, but by then I had tuned out.

Oh yeah, Connor's here too.

To put it simply, he signed my cast, our parents met, we became mutuals- not friends- and then he came along. For bonding purposes or something.

But what's so bonding about nailing dead trees into living trees?

I was almost finished with the signs by now. Just one more. I lined up the sign to the tree, then the nail to the sign, raised my hammer, and pounded into it with all my remaining force.

Instead of going through the bark, a metallic and hollow clang rang out.

"What the-?" I said to myself.

I raised the hammer and pounded again. Still the same clang.

I put down the sign, hammer and nail slowly, as if something would spring out and attack me. Standing back up, I ran my hand across the bark of the "tree". Suddenly a panel slid out from the tree and a cloud of dust blew up in my face, triggering my allergies. I tried to wave it away, coughing madly. (a.n.: in the show, dipper canonically has allergies)

When it cleared, a grey panel with switches, gears, buttons and levers, was revealed. By now thousands of questions fogged my mind. Mainly "why did they do this?" and "how did they make this blend in so well to match the actual tree bark?".

Going against all instinct, I toggled with a lever. It seemed to do nothing, until I looked to my right and saw an opening in the ground, next to an obnoxiously loud goat. It bleated in surprise. I approached it with trembling hands, my fears going into overdrive.

The opening wasn't as dirt-covered as I thought. It, like the "tree", was covered in silver metal panels. Inside was a book. I lifted it out, half-expecting a booby trap to be set off like in a movie.

The book had a maroon cover with a gold hand on the front. The hand, for some reason, had six fingers, instead of the normal five. A number three was imprinted on the hand. The corners were covered in the same material. Countless corners of pages stuck out from the top.

I opened it up to the first page. In black ink, it read, "Property of" but the name of whom it belonged to had been torn out. The next page over read, "Vol. 3". This was evidence for my idea of this being a third work.

I flipped the page and read aloud, "June 18th. It's hard to believe it's been six years since I began researching the strange and wondrous secrets of Gravity Falls, Oregon. In all my travels, never have I observed such curious things!"

Wow, some other lunatic believes this town is cuckoo.

The pages contained all sorts of oddities this person confirmed, like floating eyeballs, gnomes, and cursed doors.

I turned the page again and read, "Unfortunately, my suspicions have been confirmed. I'm being watched." Finally, it's not just me who says that! I continued on, "I must hide this book before He finds it. Remember- in Gravity Falls there is no one you can trust."

In large, bolded letters at the bottom of the page, were the words "TRUST NO ONE!"

Hmm. This place did seem eerily suspicious. "No one you can trust?" I said aloud. Were they right? Who were they? Why couldn't anyone in Gravity Falls be tru-

"HELLO!"

I squealed and dropped the book, my heart doing backflips in my chest. I turned around as I was picking it up to see Connor.

"Whatcha reading, some nerd thing?" He asked.

No, he shouldn't know!

"N-no, no, i-it's n-n-nothing!" I stammered, feeling my palms begin to sweat.

"N-no, it's n-nothing!" Connor mocked with a laugh. Some days I hated him. Ok, I take that back: every day I hate him.

"You really weren't going to tell me?" He snickered.

I sighed. Could I trust him? A sudden jerk on the book reminded me of the present: a goat was attempting to eat the journal.

I guess Connor could be... somewhat trusted.

"Let's... g-go somewhere more private," I told him.

Why was the "journal" made? Who made it? What did it contain? Paths to riches? Undocumented science breakthroughs? Portals to hell? Possibly.

The fate of our summer in Gravity Falls?

Definitely.
