As Vickey walked along to the last door, the sobbing grew louder. Once she had reached the door itself, the wailing sounded more like a siren. Slowly, Vickey turned the freezing handle clockwise, pushing the door whilst doing so.

Silently, she poked her head around the door, checking that Nancy was alone. Vickey hadn't noticed the sudden drop in volume from Nancy.

She could see her sitting on the bed facing the window with one arm wrapped around her stomach. Vckey couldn't help rushing over to Nancy, to check if she was okay. Nancy's face was streaked with tears, her mascara running down her cheeks.

Without even thinking, Vickey's arms were raised and curled around Nancy's fragile looking body, only now did Vickey realise how small she really was.

"I know about the baby."Vickey's voice was spurprisingly gently, much less hoarse than she was expecting after not using it for so long.

Nancy's face only deepened into Vickey shoulder, she could feel Nancy's salty tears soaking through her top. "I found the box, but I don't understand why you're so upset. It's a baby. That's good, isn't it?"

Vickey saw Nancy's desperate look, she could feel Nancy's eyes burning into hers, trying to say what she was feeling without having to speak. Tears were filling her eyes, both her hand were now on her stomach. "It's not the baby..." Was all that Nancy seemed ble to cry out,

"Then what is it Nancy... I don't understand." Vickey's voice had almost turned desperate now, she had begun to feel anxious.

Nancy's face had turned a sickly green, she looked like she was going to throw up. Her mouth opened but no words came out, Vickey leant in to her, hoping tht she would at least whisper. "It's you..." Nany's whisper was more like a mumur, but Vickey could hear it none the less.

"Me?" Vickey was completely confused. Nothing made any sense, what had Vickey done wrong?

"I'm just so sorry..." Nancy started,

"For what Nancy, you can tell me." Nancy looked at the fraying carpet, one of her hands moved from her  stomach to Vickey's hand.

"Brendan... Isn't a very nice person...He made me go out to find some one... some one to work for him now i'm not able to..." Nancy stuttered and choked with each word as if it was hurting her just to say each letter.

"What do you mean?" Vickey's voice was rough again, she could feel her mouth drying with each word.

"He...he runs a night club.... but he brings some people home each night, and then he lets them pay to have sex with girls who he finds... and me. But now, i'm pregnant with his child he feels like i'm his no-one elses. He said I needed to get some one else or he'd kill me and the baby. I'm sorry Vickey."

Vickey didn't know what to say. Was there anything that she could say?

"What do you mean!" Was all that Vickey was capable of spitting out of her mouth visciously,

"You used me! You tricked a teenager into coming to your house so that your boyfriend's friends could sleep with me! How selfish are you!" Vickey didn't care how harsh she was being or how desperate Nanc had been, with the mood she was in she had forgotten entirely about that.

"I am so sorry Vickey, If there was anything I could do then I would. But if I let you go he'll kill me, and the baby!" Her sobbing was loud again, her mascara running down to her chin now.

Vickey's brain felt like it was pounding against her skull, but she couldn't help feeling sorry for Nancy in some way.

She knew deep down that Nancy had no choice to do what she did, and for that Vickey knew that she had to help her as well as herself.

"What about if we escape together?" Vickey's voice was suddenly gentle, calm and warming. A friendly smile began to grow on Nancy's face but quickly turned to a worried one.

"I couldn't take my baby away from her father... Could I?" Nancy's head turned back to the window, looking out over the fields and other small houses.

"Nancy, do you really want your child growing up around some-one like him anyway?" Facing the truth, Nancy's face raised and turned back to Vickey,

"Where would we go?" Vickey could see that Nancy was starting to seriously consider the idea,

"Anywhere but here..." Vickey could tell that what she had said was true as Nancy gave a small nod and, getting up from the bed, Began to open her wardrobe.
