"Hello Kat, come in.  Please, take a seat, don't be shy."  Derek said as he beckoned me into his office.  He gave me an easy smile and I returned it with an shaky smile of my own.

"So..."  I trailed off, taking a seat in front of his desk.

"So...?"  Derek repeated after me, a teasing smile on his face.  The corners of my lips tilted up in amusement, but it quickly disappeared after I thought about my pending question.

"I'm assuming you asked me to your office to review my test results, right?"  I asked, playing with my hands in my lap.  I bit the inside of my cheek nervously and looked at Derek expectantly.

"Ah...well, yes,"  Derek told me, his face growing serious.  "Have you ever heard of GUILT or Rosalia?"

I racked  my brain for any information I'd picked up on the diseases.  They both sounded familiar, but I didn't know much about them.

"Um...wasn't GUILT created and spread by bio-terrorists?  And Rosalia...that was the hemorrhagic fever named after that fourteen-year-old, right?"  I asked, looking for his conformation.

"Yes, very good,"  Derek said, nodding his head.  "But, what we've found in your blood sampling...it's...astonishing, really.  The disease that you carry in your blood seems to test positive for both GUILT and Rosalia."

The world felt as though it froze momentarily as I processed what Derek just said.  GUILT and Rosalia were both in my blood...?  But, they were both eradicated years ago, it wasn't possible.  These diseases couldn't be in my blood.

"B-but...how is this possible, doctor?"  I stuttered, my mind still reeling with this information.

"If I'm being quite honest, no one is really sure.  And that's what worries us the most about your results, Kat.  No one has seen a case of GUILT or Rosalia in ages, and to discover that your blood may be carrying not one, but both of these agents is very concerning."  Derek's eyebrows drew together in concern, and he folded his hands together in his lap.

"Well, what do you suggest that I do?"  I asked, biting my lip in worry.  I wiped my palms on my pants out of nervousness, and took a deep breath.  It wasn't as if I wasn't expecting to be told bad news when I walked into this meeting--because I had.  I knew that we would be discussing what agent my blood was carrying and the best way to handle it, so I shouldn't be acting this way but...  I hadn't expected to be told that I was possibly carrying two deadly diseases in my blood--diseases that haven't been around in years.

"I've discussed it with Irene and many other staff members at Caduceus, and we've decided that the best course of action is to try treating you for both of the diseases individually.  We hope to isolate the diseases and get rid of them one at a time.  But, if the agents have already merged and mutated..."  he trailed off, breaking his eye contact with me.

"There is a possibility that I will die."  It was not a question.  I knew the answer without needing Derek to confirm it.  When Derek did raise his eyes to me mine again, they were doleful.

"We can only hope that the diseases have not decided to work together to attack your body; your best chance at survival lies in that hope."

I am so, so, sooo sorry for how long it's been since I last updated!  I can't believe it's been nearly a year! I really have no better excuse than my life has been incredibly busy and this story was at the bottom of my priority list--but I'm back for right now!  I can't say when the next update will be, but I promise it won't be as ridiculous a wait as my last update.

This chapter was kind of just a filler, but it was necessary to further develop the plot and the main conflict.  Even so, I hope you guys enjoyed it!

Feel free to leave a COMMENT below telling me what you guys think--I love to hear from you and I try to reply!  Also, if you enjoyed it, I would appreciate it if you VOTED and SHARED the story with your friends!

Thanks so much to all that have read--especially those of you that have been waiting for almost a year!
