Chapter 1
Serendipity
14th July
Dyana's POV:
'Argh! Let go of me!'
I stood behind the door, trembling with fear. Marice's scream filled the entire house. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I didn't know what to do.
'Dyana, run! Run before they find you!' Marice screamed behind the door.
I looked through the keyhole and saw two men in black masks dragging Marice out. I couldn't bear it. She was all I had. She adopted me after helping me escape from the terrorists as I had no family. I didn't want to lose her too.
I looked around my room. It was completely dark as it was really late. The grandfather clock in the living room bonged once and I heard the door being slammed shut. Marice's muffled screams died as she was shoved out the main door.
I started panicking. She had told me to run. Where was I supposed to go? Not out through the door as she had locked it from the other side. I tugged it with my quivering hands trying to open it for the umpteenth time this hour.
The roof of my room suddenly came tumbling down, burning. It was then that I realized the house was on fire! I went hysterical and started tugging on the window to thrust it open. It was jammed but finally gave in to the sudden spurt of adrenaline rushing through my body. Looking down, I saw that it was a forty foot jump which would definitely break my bones.
A loud deafening sound startled me and I fell. A feeling of déjà vu overcame me. It felt exactly like what happened when I was ten, except this time I didn't feel the impact of the fall. I didn't crash into the bushes. Instead, I jolted awake from this horrible nightmare.

I sat up and looked around taking in the familiar surroundings of my wretched prison with my groggy eyes. It was lit with nothing but a candle that would go out any minute now. There was food set on a plate which was lying on the floor. Other than that, the room was completely empty. There was not even a hole for sunlight to creep in.
I started pacing about the length of the room stretching my stiff body. I had been living in this prison for seven years now. I whiled away my time by sleeping as much as possible. Staying awake simply made me go crazy from lack of entertainment.
I heard the hatch creaking. I didn't look up as no one other than Lance ever came down here.
'I haven't eaten yet. Come back later.' I groaned in a sleepy voice.
'Later? Why he is not your servant to come and go at your command child.', an unfamiliar voice spoke.
I looked up curiously to know to whom that strange, gruff voice belonged to. I was bewildered to see my uncle coming down the ladder to my little prison. My uncle? Urgh! What is he doing down here?
The last time I saw him his beard was completely black. Now there were traces of white and there were wrinkles forming around his bloodshot eyes. I haven't seen him for years.
'What are you doing here?' I asked baffled from seeing him after such a long time.
'Why, I came to check on my favourite niece of course.' I guffawed on hearing his reply.
'Huh? I thought you forgot I even existed after tossing me down here. Why the sudden meeting? Are you planning on selling me? Honestly, after rotting in here for seven years I seriously don't mind.' I bluffed.
