2 years later…

I glance over at Adam and roll my eyes. Mme Fleming was droning on again about how every prince and princess has a duty to their king or queendom to always be an honourable citizen, and to be grateful for what we have, because all the kids in the four realms want to be you, and you are lucky to be so well-endowed, blah, blah, blah. We’d heard it a million times.

“Mme Fleming,” I watch as Mike stands up, “could you please explain how the succession would work if two heirs got engaged?”

“Mr. Abernathy, I have explained this already. It would do you some good to listen when I answer questions.”

“Yes, I’m sure you have, but my boy Adam,” he presses his hand down on Adam’s shoulder, causing him to shrink down in his chair, “has a really bad memory, and, because he is, in fact, dating the princess, it could become a pressing issue quite soon.”

“If Mr. Moore and Ms. Lancaster have any worries, I am sure they can ask for themselves.”

          “Yes ma’am, but—“

“Sit down, Michael! Unlike all of the other professors in this school, I am not afraid of your father! I will pick up the phone and call him in front of your classmates.” That makes him scared, and he sits down. I hear him mutter something to Adam.

“She never indulges me, does she?” he asks. Adam shakes his head and laughs. I do love that laugh. I must’ve been smiling or something, because Adam looks over and winks, which only makes me blush.

BAM! I jump at the noise, and look up into the face of Dr. Fleming.

          “Am I interrupting?!”

“No, no sir – uh – doctor.”

“Then stop making google eyes at Mr. Moore and listen to my lecture!”

“Yessir!” I say, and try hard to make eye contact. It was hard though, the dude was scary. He nods, satisfied, and goes back to his lecture. I try to concentrate, but it’s hard, he’d given us this lecture a million times.

Fortunately for me, and, I suppose, the rest of the class, the bell rings soon, and we are released from our torture. I start to gather up my things, and Adam appears beside me.

“So, you know, we really haven’t talked about it, but Mike has a point,” he says.

          “Yeah, he does.”

“Clearly, you are distracted,” he says, and helps me pack up my things.

“You don’t have to do that you know.”

“I know, but I want to,” he grabs my bag and slings it over his shoulder.

“I can really carry my own bag,” he gives me a sly smile, which says I know but carries on anyways.

“As I was saying, Mike does have a point, what are we going to when – if, we get married?” I glance up at him, and he’s smiling. It makes me smile too; we both caught his mistake.

“I guess we could combine the kingdoms.”

“You know, pretty soon it could be three kingdoms,” I look at him, and raise my eyebrows, “yeah. Mike and I were talking, and he said that his dad told him about some attacks on the border with Adleglen. He said a war would probably break out if it continues.”
