The End and the Beginning:

Emma

It took some time, and one really long speech from Rayne (maybe it counts as three or four speeches) but we finally convinced the Adleglen people that there would be no war. Rayne made me join her on stage and informed the army of the new government that we were trying. They all seemed to support the change. It made me think that maybe they hadn’t always trusted the Addled King, but what did I know? I’d never known a ruler not to be trustworthy. That set in motion the next year.

There were changes galore. The biggest, I think, was the government, but that wasn’t the most important. Matthew proposed, and we got married. It wasn’t as massive or emotionally straining as Rayne and Adam’s had been, but it was beautiful. It was conjoined with our coronation as king and queen of Adleglen. Matt and I hadn’t waited until our wedding night, so I have no idea if that’s when it happened or if it had happened before that, but he and I had a baby, around the same time as Rayne’s baby girl was born. They named her Gwynevere. She is adorable, and she has a big family. The castle was full the week of her birth, which made it difficult for me to find time for my own son. His name is Dylan; he was born exactly five days after Gwyn.

Mike

It was scary, you know, seeing Adam get stabbed, but at least the Addled King died. I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing. It all moved so fast after that. Adam was rushed off of the field on a stretcher, yelling at the paramedics to SET HIM DOWN because HE IS THE KING and HE CAN WALK ON HIS OWN. He actually grabbed my arm a few times, trying to pull himself off the stretcher and onto the ground; frankly I’m not sure he was all there. No one can walk with a sword through their leg, not even the king of three of the four realms. Damn. I have a really powerful best friend. He did finally pull himself off of the stretcher; only then did the medics sedate him. The idiots.

They took him to the hospital and fixed him up alright. It didn’t take him too long to heal, he is a faerie after all. He was up and walking by the time Rayne actually looked pregnant. You know, big round belly and all. He never showed it, but I know the poor guy was tortured by the pain. Their baby girl was born only three days after he was off crutches, he got to hold her and everything. He and Rayne were both so happy, it was gorgeous. But it got me thinking, will I ever have a family like theirs?

I started to find myself spending more and more time around them and the baby, or rather babies – Emma and Matt also spent a lot of time with Rayne because she also had a baby, a boy. The two kids were adorable together. Absolutely adorable. It’s weird, how everything worked out in the end, everything was at peace. I guess that’s what happens when a group of young adults takes over.

My favourite part of the end, though, was the final coronation, the official beginning of the brand new four realms, and the official end of our parent’s reign.

The King and the Queen

They enter through the double doors leading into the great hall, which is full of people. He wears the crown of the kings and a dark blue jacket emblazoned with the crests of the four realms. By his side is his beautiful queen, in the green dress that had been bestowed upon her by council chamber in Velaire almost two years ago. She wears the crown of the queens, and in her arms is a baby girl, dressed up for the first time especially for this occasion. Smiling, they make their way to the thrones arm in arm surrounded on all sides by the people from their three kingdoms.

As they walk, he leans over and whispers in her ear, “It’s weird, you know.”

“What is?” She asks.

“That, after all this time, all the arguments, the problems, the questions and non-answers, that, finally…the four realms are at peace.”

“Are we?”

He looks around at his people and takes his place on the left throne, “Yeah,” he says, “I think we are.”

She smiles, and takes her place by his side.
