"It's me, Chuuya," you called from behind the door.

"Come in." Opening the door, you were greeted with Chuuya's back facing you as he stared out the window. "Yuki."

"Yes, Chuuya?"

"Come here," he demanded.

You closed the door immediately and took a few strides towards him.

"That damn Dazai..."

"Dazai...?"

Chuuya picked up his glass of whiskey and took a long sip from it, leaning further back into his chair; his scowl deeper than usual.

"Damn bastard betrayed us."

Your eyes widened in surprise. "W-What?? That... That can't--" You stared at him in disbelief when no other words came out from your mouth.

"Did you know?" he asked.

"Eh? You just told me--"

"No," he interrupted. "Did you know? Did you know that he would betray us? Did you know, Yuki!?" As he demanded an answer from you, his voice rose and so did he all the while pulling his pistol out and pointing it right at you.

"No... no, Chuuya... How would I know...? How could I have known?? I can't believe you would-- No. No. No. If I had known that he was going to leave then I would have--"

"You would have betrayed us, too? You would have betrayed me? You would have left me!?"

"No! I wouldn't have!! I would've stopped him, Chuuya! I would've stopped him... He... He... Oh, God!" With him accusing you of knowing about Dazai's betrayal beforehand and you still trying to make sense of it all, you crumpled to the ground as hot tears ran down your face.

While you continued to voice out your incoherent thoughts like a madwoman, Chuuya, too, gave into his feelings and dropped his pistol onto the ground. He then kicked his pistol into a random corner of his office and pulled you close.

No words were needed as you quickly understood his affectionate gesture.

"I'm sorry, Yuki. I didn't mean it like this..."

"Oh, Chuuya... Chuuya..." you murmured while burying yourself further into his chest, his hold on you tightening.

"I had to," he simply replied.

"I had to prove to them-- no, to Mori that you were still trustworthy."

"Chuuya... I'm so sorry, Chuuya."

Your condolence was not for him having to act like the bad guy here; rather, your condolence was for him losing a close friend. Despite Chuuya always denying that he got along with Dazai, he really did believe that they did share a sort of friendship.

Since he couldn't embrace you any tighter than he already was, he simply nuzzled your head with his and let out a shaky breath he hadn't known he was holding.

"Me, too."

You moved your head to look into his eyes and cupped his face gently. His eyes were all you needed to see to further confirm how he really felt.

The two of you gazed into each other's eyes in order to express how the both of you felt. It felt as if time had stopped, allowing the two of you to grieve silently; a luxury and an experience neither of you had had due to the nature of your respective occupations.

The two of you had begun to lean in unknowingly, eyes still trained on the other's. Soon enough, both your lips had met.

Now, this kiss was not romantic. This kiss was filled with uncertainty and grief. This kiss was a way for the both of you to know that you were still there. That you were still in his embrace. That he still had you in his arms. That this intimate moment was not a cruel joke. More importantly, this moment was a way to let the two of you know that neither of you had vanished unknowingly like Dazai had.

"Do you think he'll come back?" you asked as he pulled away.

"I don't know..." he answered truthfully. "Just promise me, Yuki. That you won't leave my side."

The look he was giving you was filled with uncertainty and fear.

You knew that even if he hadn't asked you to promise him or even show this kind of vulnerability, you would always swear an oath in your heart that...

"I will never leave your side, Chuuya. I swear on my heart that I will never do that to you or even think about it."
