I smile as he calls me Lily.
It's weird. Even though I don't consider him a friend yet, I actually like how he calls me by my nickname. The only other person who called me Lily was my father. Even my mother calls me Lilyanna. She never liked it when my dad called me Lily. She said it was improper. Whatever. She's stupid.
" Why are we here to box, Theo?" I say, smiling and bitting my lip as I call him by his nickname. I'm not trying to be sexy or anything by doing this. My father use to bite his lip and well, I guess he passed it down to me. Theo narrows his eyes but smiles back.
" So I get to miss dance class." I scrunch my eyebrows. Théodore Dupont...dances? What the...? He does not look like a dancer. He must see that I'm confused because he smiles even bigger.
" What? I don't look like a dancer to you?" He's still smiling as I open my mouth to say yes but that might sound a bit rude so I close it.
" Well...I mean...I never expect-" Theo cuts me off.
" It's okay. I was just teasing. I know I don't look like a dancer. Trust me, I don't want to be one but, parents always think they know what's best for you." I nod.
" Amen to that." I hear a snort and then remember Antonio is still there.
" So are we gonna box or what?" He says, pulling on the boxing gloves. Theo just stands there, starring into my eyes. I stare back. Finally, for what feels like forever, he turns around and hops out of the ring. His friend follows him and they go to another one of the warehouse's corners and I see about five punching bags hanging from the wall. Soon I hear the sound of leather against other fabric as they start punching the bags.
I pull out my phone to see what time it is. It's only 1:30. School isn't out yet. If my mom comes to pick me up and I'm not there she will flip. But I guess I can't leave cause Theo is kind of my ride. I remind myself to make sure we get back to school on time. I wish I had my own car. My mom certainly has the money. I think she thinks as soon as I get my own car I'll leave her and never come back. Even though I'm not great with my mom right now, I would never do that to her. She couldn't handle another heartbreak after my father.
After what seems like an hour of them punching the bags(lol that sounds so weird) they come back to the boxing ring all sweaty. I smile sassily at at Theo.
" Are we gonna go soon cause my mom will flip out if I'm not at school when she comes to pick me up." I say, crossing my arms. Theo smiles.
" We're not going back to school today." I scrunch my eyebrows.
" Yes, we are. You're the one who kidnapped me so you need to take me back." I say, still crossing my arms. Theo looks back at Antonio and Antonio smiles.
" Theo! I knew you were a bad boy but kidnapping! That's too far bro." he says sarcastically. Theo playfully punches his arm with his boxing gloves still on.
" Oh? You wanna go bro?" Antonio playfully punches back. The two of them start running around, punching each other. I get up from my chair and sigh. I walk over to the ring, holding up my hands.
" Children! Children! Do I need to separate you two?" I say in my best teacher's voice. They stop and Antonio hops out of the ring and goes over to the closet where he got the boxing gloves from. He bring out a bell and I hear it jingle as he runs back over to the ring. He holds the handle of the bell out to me and I grab it, a little confused.
" You ring the bell for us to start." he says, seeing I am confused. My face lights up at this.
" You want me to be the referee?" before he can answer I hop up onto the ring and jump around, trying to act all tough. The two guys step forward as I motion them to. I lay one of my hands on each of their backs. I try not to notice how goosebumps now poke up from under my skin. As Theo shifts I feel his back muscles under my hand a chill runs down my back. I shake myself a little and clear my throat to talk in my best big-tough-guy voice.
" Alright boys. I want a nice and clean fight. Do you understand me?" the two of them nod, smiles on each of their faces. I let my mouth curve into a small smile and then I slap each of them on the back before stepping back and grabbing the bell. As they make their way back to each of their corners to get ready I feel the cool wooden handle of the bell and wrap my fingers around it. As each of them nod to tell me they're ready I shake the bell. The noise carries over the whole warehouse and the sound echoes ever so slightly. Then the fight starts.
I get out of the ring and grab my chair and pull it closer so when I have to start them again I don't have to walk as far. They fight for a while before I start them again. I find myself watching them both closely but soon I only start to watch Theo. The way this muscles contract when he's about to punch is very interesting. After about the 7th time I've started them, Theo gets Antonio into a lock that he can't escape and I see him tap out. The two men stand up, sweat dripping off of their bodies. Theo looks over at me and I quickly look away but I know he saw me looking at him.
" Do you want a try?" I look back up at him.
" What?"
" Do you want to try and box?" he says, making it clearer for me. Antonio takes off his gloves and holds them out for me. I look hesitantly at them. Would my mother approve of me boxing? I quickly push the thought away. Why do I care what my mother would think? I Still look hesitantly at the gloves. Finally my excitement takes over and I snatch the gloves and climb into the ring.
