Theo leaves me outside of my house, thinking over what he said. I hear a door slam and I turn around to see my mom racing towards me. Behind her comes 3 men, all in uniforms. Oh my god.
" Mom! You freakin called the police?! What the hell?!" as she starts to move towards me I can see she wants to give me a hug. She wraps her arms around me tightly and I can feel her start to cry. My anger at her immediately melts away and for the first time in a long time, I hug her back. Between sobs she tries to talk but all I can make out is " thought...were...kidnapped...worried... sick...scared...to...death...don't...ever...do...again."
I reassure her that I wasn't kidnapped and she apologizes to the police. They soon leave and my mother pulls me inside. Once she slams the door I know she's mad now.
" Where the hell were you?! When I got to school to pick you up they said you were absent? Did you even go to school?" I set my school bag down and take off my shoes.
" Of course I went to school, but at lunch..." I trail off. Should I tell my mom someone smacked my butt and that then I proceeded to smack him across the face? That then I was dragged away with a guy I had just met and he took me to a warehouse where he boxed instead of going to dance class? And that then I started to box but then I hit Theo in the stomach and we had to stop? I choose to lie.
I tell her I wasn't feeling good after lunch and I went home. I know this isn't a logical explanation because obviously I wasn't home but when she tries to ask me more questions I say I'm tired and head up stairs. She tells me we'll talk about it in the morning. Yeah right. She'll probably forget by then.
I enter the first room on the right and climb into bed, not bothering to change into my pajamas. I stare up at my ceiling for a while and then Théodore's sayings pop into my head. I realize he said two tonight but I only focus on one.
" Nothing ever happens like you imagine it will."
That 's certainly true for what happened today. I was not expecting to be boxing with people I didn't even know, or to be smacked on the butt, but it was the best first-day of school I had ever had.
This school is going to be very different from the last.
