Chapter Fourteen

I woke to a dank, empty cell, one similar to the one I awoke to when I was first brought here. The room was full of the smell of rotting corpses and dried blood; to me it seemed like hell. I couldn’t move from the stinging sensation that greeted my body as I tried to move even an inch. I felt dead. I fought through the pain to touch my neck, to find it tender from bruised skin and blood crusted up over a bite wound.

How long had I been in this cell?

I’m never going to get out now. Maybe I was dead, and this was something like purgatory, and I was waiting for my soul to be judged. That’s what they told me happens when you die. Sometimes I imagined what it would be like to be free: to not be restricted to where I can go, what I do, what I eat and drink or what I wear. Would I ever live a normal life again though? From how they said it, I could just get picked again.

I’d never escape them. Maybe I could run far away where they wouldn’t be able to follow my scent; maybe I was being too optimistic. I curled up into a ball and shook from the cold. I felt a single tear run down my cheek and watched as it hit the concrete floor which I called my bed. Pink scars ran up from my elbows to my shoulders and along my legs, where I’d assumed I’d been dragged into the cell.

More than anything though, I wanted to find out why I’d been locked into a cell. The last thing I could remember was Scott yelling at me to eat my food, and then I woke up in this cell. Sierra appeared in front of me and frowned, nudging my body slightly. I scrunched my eyes up in pain.

“Brix, you need to get out of here before Patrique finds you! I heard him talking...bad things...and they involved you” she whispered, shaking like a leaf. I saw her eyes well with tears. I shook and bite my lip as I sat up, my body roaring with an aching pain.

“What do you mean?” I said through a harsh whisper, my throat completely dry and my words quiet in my attempt to be heard. Sierra sighed and looked through the slit in the door to make sure nobody was there; her voice was only heard by me but if they heard me talking to her, it would look like I was going crazy, and that would lead to more trouble.

“Brix I can’t tell you! He was talking to Scott about your ‘punishment’ or something along those lines. I don’t know who or what it’ll be. Apparently Scott has feelings for both you and Monica and he’s going to ask the council about it. Obviously Patrique doesn’t want that. Maybe he’ll put you permanently out of the picture” she whimpered as footsteps approached the cell and she disappeared into the air.

I swallowed. The footsteps stopped. I carefully stood and cringed but walked over to the door. Slowly, I peered into the glass window shape that connected me to the outside world. Patrique punched his brother across his jaw and the ear-splitting cry from Scott nearly made my ears bleed. “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT FOR?” Scott screamed at his brother as blood poured from his mouth.

Patrique shrugged. “I wanted to punch something” he laughed, “and you were the closest person. Also, I know what’s been happening between you and Gwen, and don’t try to lie about it. You bit her and made it obvious to everyone else, just because your own mate won’t even be associated with you! That doesn’t mean you go and cheat with mine!”

“Gwen said you don’t even talk to her” Scott growled back, pushing his jaw back into place. “Now, go sort out Brix before I sort out you” he added, pushing him into the cell before locking it. By then I was curled up again, and I figured that if I pretended to be asleep I would be ok. He kicked me to make sure I was alive...I guess.

“Honestly I don’t see what he sees in you” he whispered, assuming I was unconscious or asleep. In reality, I heard every single word. I growled under my breath as a warning to him. Sierra spat at him knowing she was safe because he couldn’t see her. “You used to have drive in you, but now you’ve given up haven’t you Brix?”
