Chapter 5

Two weeks later

I woke up at 6:30 this morning.  Today was going to be an important day.  I had to attend a meeting thing to see if I got into HUC.  I couldn't wait!  But I was also scared.  What if I wasn't good enough?  What if I wasn't even close enough to make it?  Suddenly, I got a shiver down my back.  It was dark  outside.  It's been only 10 minutes, since I woke up.  I brushed my teeth and started on my makeup.  Man, was my hair a mess.  It was literally sticking up, as if it was trying to reach for the lights.  I finished my makeup and fixed my hair.  I looked through my closet to pick out what I wanted to wear.  I saw a sari that was new.  I don't remember  getting this.  It sure was beautiful.  The skirt was white with roses and the top was just goergeous.  " You better wear it", I heard a voice say behind me.  Surprised I turned around and saw Sonya standing there.  I was surprised to see her up so early, because she says'beauty sleep' is essential.  She walked up to me, smiling and gave me a kiss on my forehead like I was a little kid.  " I am very proud of you, I bought this dress just for you.  It doesn't matter what college you go into, this dress will always remind you of me.  I gave her a hug and whispered a thank you into her ear.  

Latika had to go to school today, so she can't come along.  Dadaji had work. And Anjalli didn't want to come.  So it was just me, my mom and Sonya.  Sonya didn't really dress up today, which was a surprise.  Our car was gone because, the company we gave it to, said there was too much damage.  Now we had to get a new car soon.

The car ride sure was long and bumpy.  It was 3 1/2 hour drive.  Mamaji kept telling me that it would be okay if I don't get in and all that.  When we got out of the car, she was still talking to me.  Wow, she really didn't want me to get hurt.  I grabed my mom's shoulder with both arms.  Then she stopped talking.  I looked at her and said, "Mamaji, calm down, I will be upset at first but i'm sure i'll get into my other choice colleges. Okayyyy??"  I sighed.  "It's..It's just that your growing up so fast... I'll miss you." said mamaji.  She looked like she was going to break into tears. "Mamaji, I'll miss you too, but I'll always visit and remember you, I love you"  Mamaji huged my tight and said, "I love you too"  We walked into the tall glass building.  It was pretty crowded.  Huh, funny it was crowded like the dream I had.  Of course only 200 people will be picked out of the few thousand that were here.  I started sweaty.  Which was probably not a pretty look on my, i jokingly thought.  All this tension and sweat was really bothering me.  I was a nervous wreck.  I decided to go use the restroom, even if I didn't have to.  

        I finally found the restroom in this ginormous building.  The restroom section itself was divided by a medium sized room.  And in the room, on one side there was a doorway labeled woman, that was led to a halway with stalls.  The mens was on the other side of the room.  I walked into the woman bathroom.  I walked into a stall.  Apparently there was someone else in the stall next to mine.  Turns out I did need to use the bathroom.  I flush the toilet and walk out the stall.  I wash my hands.  I burned my hand because the the water was left on HOT.  I dried my hands and walked towards the door to exit.  I pushed the door a bit too hard and I hit the door on someone because I could feel it and I heard someone yelp.  Next thing I know, I was pulled down to the floor with a body's weight.  My lower back and shoulder hurted from the impact.  The person was still on me. My head was laying sideways and I strained to turn my head to see who it was.  My eyes were blury at first, then my eyes focused.  I couldn't believe who it was. 

        It was Rahul.

        We stared into each others eyes.  I saw the sparkle again in his eyes.  His features were more visible.  Neither one of us could move.  I felt my face blush.  It was like we were frozen.  Then, I heard footsteps coming form behind the woman's bathroom door.  Uh-oh, the other person who was in the stall was approaching the door.  I cleared my throat loudly to break the ice.  He snapped back into life and quickly got off me.  I saw him blush, and his face turned into a tomato.  He offered a hand to help me up.  But I was too panicked.  I tried to get up by myself.  I got up half way and slipped on the new sari, and fell back down again.  This time I hit my head hard. OMG! Why do I keep embarrassing myself.  Now the lady who was in the stall next to me walked out of the bathroom. She stopped looked at me, gave me a face and just walked away.  Since I already embarassed myself enough. I decided to take a deep breath and accept Rahul's hand to help me up.  Now I was face to face with him.  He said,"I'm so so sorry!..This is my second time I embarassed you.  I'm so sorry" This time I decided to take it cool. " No, No it's fine, accidents always happens, what are you doing here anyway?"  

"Oh, I am here for the meeting thing to see if I got into HUC."

"Wait, what?!,  how??  Just two weeks ago you barely even knew what a college was, now you were able to apply for one of the best colleges in the world?"  I didn't realize that I had raised my voice, and now I was shouting."How is that even possible?"

"Well, I got a new job at a gas station.  And the mayor came to the gas station in his limo.  His driver parked the car at the parking lot.  The mayor walked into the gas station store to buy a drink.  I was fixing the items on the shelf.  Then the mayor was walking down the same isle and I saw a puddle of water in front of him. I rushed over and just as the mayor slipped, I caught him."  Rahul continued, "The mayor was so happy, he said he'll give me anything I want,  sooo I asked to apply for HUC.  Because it was the mayor, I was able to apply."

"What?! That is so not fair! I had to apply three years ago and you just get to apply like this?!" I snapped.  I felt my face hot!  Rahul had backed up scared.  "I hate you, Rahul.  Why!, Why, every time you do something, I have to hate you huh??!  I couldn't believe it.  It just wasn't fair.  You had to be amazing in school just to apply.  I literally tried my whole life for this.  And he gets in for saving someone from slipping.  Uhh!  I walked out of the room and slamed the door behind me.  

I started walking back towards the main area where they the meeting was going to take place.  I just couldn't believe it.  How are things just soooo easy for him?  Uh!  Anyway, I'm just going to forget about it.  Today was supposed to be a good day.  And I'm not letting Rahul ruining it.  I saw my mamaji and she waved toward me.  I put on a smile and put everything that just happened to the back of my head.  

"You look less worried!", mamaji exclaimed.  "Maji!! I just lost my nevousness.  Thanks for bringing it back!", I joked.  

We all took a seat,  maji sat next to me.  There was an empty seat on my other side.  I let out a sigh.  Wow, i've been dreaming of this day for my whole school life.  

I reminded myself that it's okay if I don't get in.  I really didn't want to be depressed if I didn't make it.  Someone took a seat on my other side.  I was lost in thought and didn't notice. 

"Are you ready?" I heard a voice say next to me.  I didn't turn.  I froze...that voice was familiar.
