Hearing my name roll off his tongue was like watching venom drip from a snakes fangs. Unsettling and petrifying.
Devon raised a finger - a silent order to remain where I was. It was difficult, I wanted to scream, cry, crawl away... call my mom and just hear her voice.
"Boss-" I jumped at the sudden intrusion and held my breath when the noise rang through the ventilation shaft. Devon grabbed the back of his neck and ducked his head down. There was a moment of silence before the person continued, "No sign of her although we found a bag near a computer... that happened to be-" He was cut off.
"I don't give a fuck about the computer Ben!" Isaac shouted, I heard a slap before Isaac's voice polluted the air again, "give me that bag." Devon slowly moved closer to the vent.
He turned to me as best he could and mouthed, 'Your bag?', I chewed on my bottom lip and nodded. He pulled a sour face before looking back down the vent.
"Yes..." Isaac said slowly, his voice filled with lust, "That is my little Aria." He stated, "Now find her so we can deal with it." He spat, "Where's her mother again?" He quizzed.
A lump formed in my throat. They knew where my mother was? Anguish like no other gripped me tight and held me still as I focused on their conversation.
"She's at her new home, last time we passed she had only just arrived back." Ben cooed, "We watched her house last night boss, the girl spotted Nate from the bathroom window and locked the place down. We checked after the house went silent." He stated. A shiver went up my spine as I recalled that persons- Nate's- creepy smile as he watched me in my bathroom.
"So, What you're telling me is..." Isaac spat harshly, "You allowed a member of your corps to be seen?" He probed. Although I couldn't see them, I could hear them. There was a clicking noise as Isaac paced around his poor fellow member.
Sympathy radiated from me in waves, Isaac- while being protective of me- was never understanding and if something went pear shaped... let's just say, nobody got off easy. I remember dropping a pencil when he was reading one time, he lashed out, launching his book across the room etc. It was terrifying, so terrifying in fact, that I didn't want to break up with him just in case he did something irrational.
"No boss..." Ben's voice cracked, "I set up a metre perimeter- from the fence- Nate disobeyed it.".
"Disobeyed?" Isaac mocked, "You say that like you have any right to be giving orders." the words must have bit into Ben because soon there was a cacophony of raised voices and grunts.
Devon shook his head in distaste as the fight continued. His hair fell over onto his forehead but he didn't bother pushing it back, it was quite a sight. Devon was leaning on his side with his arms folded in front of him as he beheld the scene below. I wasn't one for the badboy exterior but Devon was definitely an exception. He had a badboy exterior and interior.
Eventually, their fight subsided. It ended with that awful sound, the bang of an emptied gun. There was a sickening thump as someone fell to the ground, Devon looked away with a grimace on his face. It wasn't going to be pleasant.
"Last time that mother-fucker ever disobeys me." Isaac spat, he was breathless, "Now..." he drawled, "My dear Aria, where is your mommy?" Isaac cooed. I could hear the shuffling of my bag as Isaac undoubtably rummaged through it.
There was a jingling sound. A sigh of content and another unsettling comment, "Look at this, keys?" Isaac mumbled.
My body stiffened as Isaac jingled the keys around, taunting me. It was as if he knew I was in here, it was like he was daring me to come out. Devon wouldn't have made our sudden disappearance look discreet considering the locked-from-the-inside door and the chair under the doorknob.
I shook. Devon was shaking me, a hand firmly on my forearm, he was hanging out of the vent with a look of determination on his face.
He dragged me out and placed me on the ground, keeping my head close to his chest. I fought against him but he held me firm, "You don't want to see that." He said softly, bringing his other arm around my shoulders. I shut my eyes and allowed the tears to fall as it all sank in.
I was in danger now. My mother was in danger. Isaac has my keys, knows where I live and he definitely knows that my mom is at home. In fact... I'll be surprised if he doesn't know something about me.
I hadn't realised that we'd stopped until I felt Devon roaming his hands up and down my arms, "Calm down, we have to go." He whispered.
Reluctantly, I pulled away from him and weaved around the library behind him. There was no sign of anybody remaining, I prayed that everyone got out unscathed. It would place an immense amount of guilt on me if someone had been hurt by Isaac during his mission to find me...
Devon raised a hand and willed me to remain still. I sat back on my heels and watched through the shelf. There were three men and that woman from yesterday, she was twirling a dirty braid around her hand and scanning her surroundings.
An emotion I couldn't place captured Devon's face however, he didn't linger for much longer. He pressed onwards, making his way to the fire exit. I rolled my watery eyes at the irony of the situation, another fire exit? Really?
He approached it slowly, checking the floor before standing to his full- astonishing- height. His boots creaked as his form stretched out, I looked down at the scuffed leather and waited.
"I'm opening this door. We are running. My car is black- it's the only truck in the lot..." he shrugged, drifting off for a moment, "nonetheless-" he said shaking his head, "As fast as you can okay. Backseat, hide until I'm in the car." I nodded firmly, fear restricting my movements. I prayed that my small legs could carry me across the lot fast enough.
Devon counted to three slowly before throwing the door open, raised voices were heard instantly, Devon ran from the door and left me standing in the doorway. He paused and shouted at me, "RUN-".
He didn't get to finish his sentence before one of the three men bowled into him, smashing Devon into the wall, in watched as his face scrunched up in agony before he threw himself at the man.
"FOR FUCKS SAKE ARIA, GO!" Devon yelled, in an instant my feet were moving again. I started out the door before a strong grip caught my hand, I turned and came face to face with the woman.
She gave me a crooked smile before speaking, her sandpaper voice had my teeth standing on edge, "Hello Aria." She crooned, "I wish I could say its a pleasure... but it's been an awful test to find you my darling." She cocked her head to the side, "and with Devon Ackleton again?" I tried to get away, pulling at my hand. I could see Devon's truck off in the distance, if I had just ran...
"Please...please" I pleaded, tears running free yet again, "Leave me alone please..." I sobbed. I clawed at her hand now with my nails but she didn't flinch.
In fact, she smiled, "This is sad... this I actually depressing." She laughed, it sounded more like a hiss, "P-please don't" she mocked me.
Suddenly, a familiar face emerged from the library.
And it wasn't Devon.
"Aria." Isaac breathed.
