"I warned you...that was intense." Kat said, whacking the volleyball over the net, I blew out a breath and wiped the sweat off my forehead, "Although..." she breathed, "shit didn't hit the fan until you asked why." Kat gave me a quick hug before walking over to the bench.
Intense didn't do my previous encounter justice, and I couldn't think of a word that did. Personally, I didn't want to meet Devon again anytime soon but I had to, Jodi and Kat are surely to become my very fast friends and I can't lose them.
The boys were on the soccer field opposite, I glanced over and watched the boys - Devon, Parker, Ace, Joe and Harrison - playing. They were on the boys soccer team and I wasn't surprised, those boys could play.
When I caught a glimpse of Devon once again, my mind drifted back to his question. Isaac Kingsley is a chapter of my history that I would not like to revisit. My associations with him were pleasant for a time until I discovered his true intentions... and then the hits just kept coming, starting with the death of my father.
He died of lung cancer when I was nine. Me and my mother have had eleven years to recuperate but the void he left in our home has never eased, no matter how many times we moved. It's the whole reason we had to start moving in the first place, my mothers job wasn't keeping our heads above the water and so she jumped at the first available job with no consideration for the consequences.
The thought irked at me the whole walk home, fortunately, not very many people walked my way home - which I was grateful for. My mothers car was already in the driveway which lead me to presume she didn't even go to work today. I rolled my eyes and opened the door, "I'm home!" I called out.
"Oh good, Aria come here I need some help." She poked her head out of the kitchen and smiled brightly before disappearing again, I chuckled and threw my bag down before finding her. She was sitting amongst a collection of boxes, "It would be a great help if you could unpack some of these boxes for me." She tapped the spot next to her and I sat down, beginning to rummage through the boxes.
I picked up a photo frame that was embellished with crystals, it was a picture of my mother and father on their wedding day. They looked so happy, especially my mom, she always used to tell me that she believed there was only one man out there for her, and it was undoubtably him. Suddenly, a question popped into my mind, "Mom, do you remember Isaac Kingsley?"
As if someone pressed pause, she froze. I watched her for a while until she slipped out of her trance, "No... no why, why'd you ask?" I frowned and shrugged.
"No reason, I just bumped into someone today who reminded me of him." I felt uneasy, it was as if some sort of blanket of silence was draped over us. I cleared my throat and got to my feet, "I'll unpack some of the boxes for my room..." my mother stiffly nodded and continued to fish through boxes.
Unusual...
I brushed it off and made my way into my room, all that was in there was a bed, a desk and a load of boxes. I started unpacking them, placing the photos of my father on multiple units in my room. The closet was a walk-in and already full to the brim with my clothes.
My mother definitely remembered Isaac, the amount of times he came over and engaged in conversation with her was infinite. I presumed she had just wanted to drift away from the subject of Isaac... after all, he did turn out to be a complete and utter dickhead.
"Hey, Aria." My mother called from downstairs, "I'm popping out to the shops, do you want to come? I could use someone to stop me from overindulging..." her voice held a lilt. I grinned and made my way down the stairs, phone in hand.
