You peeled open your eyes hesitantly, unsure of the time. Sitting up in your bed, you scratched your head feeling like, well, shit. You were very tired, you stank, and all the sweat from the little... 'adventure' you had made you feel very uncomfortable as it dried on you and now you felt like you were dumped in soft drink and didn't take a shower to wash it off. Standing up, you stumbled into the hallway and down the stairs, making a beeline to the laundry, you looked around for a towel. When you couldn't find one, you just gave up and left and started to roam the house looking for one.
You walked into the kitchen and grabbed some orange juice, leaning on the counter you drank straight from the bottle. Swallowing the pulp-less juice, you screwed the cap on and put it back in the fridge, roaming the house again for a towel.
"Mum?" you called out, awaiting a response, waiting for her to call out so you could ask for your wanted towel. "Mum?" you called out louder. "Mum!". You rubbed your face, slightly worried. It was around lunch, a day later from the event at the city and she would have woken up hours ago and she doesn't usually ignore you. I mean, how the heck were you going to find her. If she went to the shops she would leave a note, a note... that's it!
You ran back to the kitchen and read everything stuck to the fridge door.
Nothing.
Just shopping lists, notes, quotes and photos of her and your father and a couple of you. You frowned, now you were really worried. You screamed out her name and waited a few seconds as your voice reverberated slightly through the house.
Still silence.
Tears pricked at your eyes. You felt oddly alone now. Sure, you've felt the crushing weight of being alone before but now you were genuinely scared. Your small rat crawled into the room and stood under the arch connecting the kitchen to the hall near the front door. You looked down at it and it scurried slowly over to you before sitting on your foot, clutching onto your toes. Wiping at your eyes, you began to walk around the house more, grabbing your mothers phone that was on the kitchen bench in the process. The soft padding of your feet against the polished wood wasn't helping. Your rugged breathing, sniffling, and occasional hiccups were the only things keeping you company. You turned into the library and looked around, the book she was reading yesterday was thrown halfway across the room and half open. That wasn't normal for your mother. She was a clean freak and wouldn't carelessly throw things like that.
After not finding her in the house you went outside, stopping in your tracks.
The flyscreen was broken off and the lock on the door was broken with it. You started to cry, not cry, no. Bawl. Your eyes stung and your chest clenched, it was horrible. You needed her now. You stood still in the hall, waiting for her to walk out from behind you and hug you, whisper everything was okay in your ear and, well, be a mother because you needed it now more than ever. Something horrible happened. Your mind started to race with thoughts it was deafening. You can't lose both parents. First your father was gone somewhere and now your mother was missing. You collapsed to your knees and started to wail with deep emotions you've never felt. Your eyes hurt, blood pumped through your ears as hot tears streamed down your face, wiping at your nose. Clutching the phone close to your chest for a sense of security, your rat made a little scatter from behind you.
He was sitting on the stairs staring at you. When you looked into his void, dead eyes, he scurried upstairs. You ran after him, curious as to what he was doing, tears still streaming. He ran to your bedroom and you looked at him, he stared at the door where multiple marks where near the handle, meaning someone tried to get in but your automated lock system on your door prevented anyone from getting in as it acted like a seal that sealed the door to the wall. You felt a sense of security from the look of it, you protected yourself without meaning to, you didn't even know you closed the door on your way in and that was relieving because who knows what they could've done to you. But you felt a massive wave of guilt. It was shut and your mother couldn't get in to protect herself either. The rat then scurried in and you flicked the light switch after him. He jumped onto your bed and then looked at your laptop that was open on your desk. Your eyes widened, the cameras you set up.
