Sunny never knew her mom, just like everyone else in the Flightless Village. She was abandoned there when she was two, or younger. The only thing she remembered from her past was her mom leaving her in the Flightless Village with their old worn leather jacket and having said "Be safe, Sunny."
And that was all Sunny knew about her mom. To that day, she wore the leather jacket her mom had left.
Life in the Flightless Village was tough. Everyone was just a kid like Sunny. The farms were tended by the patrol men from cloud city.
Cloud City. Oh, how Sunny WISHED she lived there. Most of the food picked in the Flightless Village went there, about nine tenths of it. People weren't forced to grow wings when they were 12 up there.
Sunny had been avoiding the patrols for months. She had recently turned twelve, the age where you would usually be forced to grow wings, or die in the process. Sunny had no idea why the King enforced this, but she still said off the streets when patrol came.
Food was scarce. Sunny usually snuck to the farms to pick a few apples to share with her friends, Luna and Sky.
Sky had light blue hair that was cut to around her ear lobe. She was only eleven, so was safe from patrol.
Luna was a different story.
Luna was thirteen, way to old to still be flightless. She had very dark purple hair that came to her waist.
Sunny walked in the Flight-Camp, a refuge for kids to old to be flightless. Patrols never searched there.
Sunny tossed an apple to everyone. "Thanks, Sunny." Luna said quietly, quickly biting into the apple's red skin.
The three girls were the only "safe" WingStalls, kids deemed to old to still be flightless. Other WingStalls fearfully wandered the streets of the Village. Sky and Sunny took turns getting food, taking in other WingStalls, and other things to help.
"Sunny, mines tart." Sky said.
"I'm not risking going back in the orchards." Sunny replied.
"I guess I could buy some food from the market. What you guys got?" Sunny suggested.
"I have one gold and a silver." Luna offered, handing Sunny two quarter-sized coins made of gold and silver respectively.
"I've got nothing." Sky sighed.
Sunny began walking outside, but Luna stopped her. "You need to be careful. If a patrol asks, you're ten." She commanded. Sunny nodded, exiting.
There were kids speckled around the village, gathered around fires. A few were fortunate enough to have their own food grown in secret to sell. One in particular was named Lynn.
Lynn sold apples, stolen just like the food Sunny and her friends ate. Lynn was fifteen, the oldest in the village. She was lucky enough to look ten, like Sunny.
"Hi SunBun!" Lynn chimed happily.
"How many apples can I get for one gold and a silver?" Sunny asked.
"Six." Lynn replied basically.
Sunny heard a loud yell from down the alley. "The apples need to wait!" Sunny yelled, running in the direction of the cry.

OMG! This is a really long chapter, but I really hope Chapter 2 is shorter.
