PROLOGUE
"B-But Marise, you said that you liked me then why are you suddenly breaking up with me? I broke up with Carrie for you and I'm not sure why you're acting so strange," said Adam with a look of hurt and betrayal plastered on his face.
Marise gave Adam a fake smile and spoke, "You seriously fell for that act? Honey, I was playing you. I have no interest in dating you. No offence."
She pitied him. Even though this is what she does. Her 'job' is to ruin those relationships that are strong and unbreakable. But Adam was a nice lad who trusts anyone and everyone easily and it broke her heart to look at such an amazing guy vulnerably begging her to stay with him.
She gave him a short nod and turned her head to see the whole student body of her school looking at the scene of the latest gossip topic for this week. Some were smirking or laughing or even giving her the sting eye but she was well-too known with this situation. After all, she had ruined more than 15 relationships in the last two years.
Marise was a professional at this and there was no doubt. Some people hated her for this and then there were some dumbshits who idolized her.
Two of her best friends, Lisanna and Nadia, were smiling with encouragement but it was all an act. She could see the disappointment in their eyes. It wasn't like Marise did this with her own will. Kids come and challenge her for about $30 to break a couple and she does. It's mostly for money.
She was glad that the school was over for today. Finally, she could go home and look through her Tumblr dashboard and drool over Dylan O'Brien. But she never thought that someone will make a bet with her of $150 at that very day.
Marise started walking towards her friends when someone tapped on her shoulder. She expected Adam to be standing there but it was Calum Hood, her 'friend' but she regarded him as just a guy who thought him and her were friends but she have zero shits about him, if being brutally honest.
"I want to make a bet with you of $150. It will be a huge challenge for you, I'm warning you beforehand," Calum smirked.
He had made a bet of such a huge price. Marise was not backing out even if the job was difficult. "I will do it, Hood. Message me the details and stuff," she told him.
He shot her a smug look and spoke, "But here's the catch, don't tell anyone about this bet. Not even your two best friends whom you always roam around with. It should be a secret between us and only us."
She nodded her head and started walking again towards her friends. Finally, she made a deal that could help her in paying her college tuition fee.
"Why was Calum talking to you, Ree?" Nadia asked.
"He was just congratulating me for winning the bet," Marise lied like a professional.
"Oh."
She could sense that Nadia and Lisanna were not convinced but she cannot tell both of them anything right now. Calum had especially warned her not to tell them so she won't.
Later that evening, Marise received a message from Calum regarding the information for her next victims.
Calum: Luke Hemmings and Ally McQueen. 2 months tops. Best of luck. ;) xx
Marise: Will be done, keep the money ready. And thanks for the best wishes ! :) x
This was the first time she was given a time limit and it excited Marise a lot. She was not going to let such an interesting and challenging bet slip away from her hands. She was thinking that making Luke, one of the most attractive guys in her year, fall for her is easy but what she wasn't expecting was the heartbreak and drama that was going to happen soon in her life.
