PART ONE

CHAPTER ONE

"Mari, I am craving ice cream right now. Let's go to the ice cream parlour near your house," Lisanna whined.

Marise was about to protest but was defeated by their other friend, Nadia.

"I second that. My taste buds are dying to taste some butterscotch ice cream," spoke Nadia with a glint of excitement evident in her forest green eyes.

Now that Nadia had agreed with Lisanna, it was clear to Marise that even if she refused to listen to them they will drag her to the parlour against her will.

It was a school night but both of her friends did not care. What she has come to know in their nine years of friend was that whatever Nadia and Lisanna want, they will get it.

Marise sighed deeply, "Fine, but I'm not paying for any of your crap. Bring your own money and use it because I am completely broke and it's all because of you two shitheads."

Both of her friends stifled their giggles, they knew that after a little pestering Marise will pay for their ice cream like she had been doing for the past three years. It was like a tradition now.

The ride to their destination was a real short one because of the distance and Marise was thanking God for that as her friends were horrible drivers and as she did not have her driving license yet, they did not granted her the permission to drive their car. It was a miracle that they had not encountered with a car accident.

The small ice cream shop was in full swing even though it was a school night. Full of teenagers and young adults. The atmosphere of the place was cheerful and it made Marise feel calm and in peace after such a long time.

"What are you hotshots ordering?" asked Lisanna with excitement.

Her face light up like a Christmas tree when she saw the endless variety of ice cream. Lisanna was still a kid from heart.

"Something with chocolate for sure," Marise mumbled. Nadia rolled her eyes because her friend always ordered chocolate ice cream; it was a miracle if she ever chose to eat a different flavor.

Nadia scolded her, "Your taste buds suck big time. Try something new, asswipe."

"Simpson, has anyone ever told you that you are very boring?" a way too amused voice spoke from behind all of the three girls.

They turned around and were greeted with the sight of Calum Hood and his best friend Michael Clifford smirking at them.

Marise shot them an offended look and spoke with sarcasm, "Really? Damn it, my life is officially over because the great Calum Hood thinks I'm boring."

The boys laughed at her sarcastic comment. She was anything but boring, her sense of humor was what attracted most people.

"I just realized that the ice queen is in an ice cream shop. Coincidence, I think not. The ice cream shop can literally be your castle," said Michael with a cheeky grin

She shot him a blank look and spoke, "Ha-ha, so funny."

Both of her friends bit their bottom to prevent the laughs that were about to burst out from inside their mouths. They were aware of the fact that Marise hated when she was addressed as the 'ice queen'.

"He's right, you know," Calum said with a teasing smile.

He smacked Marise's butt jokingly to which she shot him a glare.

She subconsciously noticed that there was a pair of eyes watching all this unfolds with a bored gaze. It was Luke Hemmings, her target. She did not notice him before but now, she was not able to take her eyes off him.

Luke was not a big fan of Marise and it was no secret. He thought she was ill-mannered and a heartless girl with no respect for herself as well as other people. In his opinion, she was the Australian version of Regina George.

Marise was aware of the hard feelings Luke had for her but she simple chose to ignore them, being the sensible individual, she is.

"Hi, Hemmings," she smiled politely at him.

He gave her a disgusted look, "Am I your next challenge or something?"

She stiffened a little but composed herself real quick. Luke's blunt and rude behavior caught her off guard.

"Wow, are you so desperate to date me that you started assuming that you are my next so called 'target'," she raised her left eyebrow mockingly.

Marise was trying her best not to look nervous because if he found out then it would be her first failure in this 'game' of hers.

Luke faked a laugh, "Sweetie, I have a girlfriend."

"I never said you didn't and don't sweetie me, idiot," she glared at him.

He was about to retort some insult when Michael came in between their quarrel, "Calm down, you two. And Luke stop being a *fruit loop to Marise, she was just trying to be nice but you started World War Three with her."

"Leave it, Michael. Some people don't know how to treat others," grumbled Marise with annoyance.

Nadia realized that if Marise and Luke kept on fighting then neither of the two groups will be able to get ice cream so she decided to end this war for today by stepping in.

"Come on, M, let's take our ice creams and get going. You have to tutor us for the Physics test that's next Monday, remember?" She shot her best friend a look telling her to play along.

But Calum had to ruin the plan and said with furrowed eyes, "What the fuck? No one told me that we have a Physics test next Monday!!"

"That's because we don't," a sickly sweet voice spoke up, leaving Nadia frustrated because can't for once everything that she plans carry on the way she wants it to.
