The afternoon sun put a soft, golden haze over the city, making it almost seem like everyone was walking around in a vintage movie. The ones where they still used film. The Wollmanrink was by far one of the most romantic places in the city. It was located in the middle of Central Park and while skating you were surrounded by nature, yet the tall buildings peeped through the silhouettes of the large trees that had turned red and orange and golden by the scepter of fall. They had already begun to play Christmas songs, even though it was just November. Christmas was still miles away.
Along the people amongst who many were tourists skated two lovely young people. A boy on ice hockey skates and a girl on white figure skates. They chatted and laughed and glanced at each other with sparkling eyes. Rose tried to teach him some spins and jumps, while he challenged her to beat him in a race. He turned out to be surprised by her speed. Rose May was definitely not a force to be reckoned with.
After skating for a while they stepped of the ice and sat down on one of the benches. Rose glanced over at Luke. Her blue eyes lit up in the sunlight.
"This is fun," she said, "I never get to do things like this with my family."
"Because of the fame and stuff?"
She nodded. "Wherever we go, we're always being followed closely by paparazzi."
"That sucks."
"People assume that it gets normal at some point, especially if you were born into it, but I don't think it's something I'll ever get used to."
He put his hand on her knee. "If you're ever in need of a hide-out spot, call me. I know a few in the city."
She smiled and repositioned her hat. "Thanks, you're such a good person. I really like being with you and that's sort of, well, exceptional, because I'm not that easy, you know."
He shifted a bit. His face got tense in a way that showed nervosity. "Speaking of that, I, uhm, I kind of wanted to ask you something and please don't get freaked out by this, okay? So, I really like you and I think you're really beautiful and kind and intelligent and I was wondering if you maybe, like, want to be my girlfriend?"
Her eyes grew large and she had to look away for a moment to hide the surprised look on her face. She stared at her light pink gloves. She felt the swarm of butterflies arising in her stomach.
"Yes," she said, while glancing over at him again. She smiled shyly. "I really like you too, but I'm really inexperienced, so."
Before she could even finish that sentence he had planted his soft lips on hers. Her body froze. She firmly grabbed the bench she was sitting on; she was afraid she would fall off of it. He pulled back and examined her face. "I'm sorry, that was too much. I just, I've been thinking about this for a while now." She chuckled and kissed him again. This time it was a little bit more roughly. Rose was out of breath by the time she'd let go of his lips again.
"Me too."
He smiled and put his arm around her. "You're really special, you know that?"
As Rose headed back home, she couldn't believe she'd just been kissed for the first time! She'd been thinking about the whole concept for a while now. Everyone in her class was starting to lose their virginity and stuff, while she hadn't even been kissed yet. She didn't care that much about it on the other side. Her mother always advocated waiting until the right time came around and this, this felt really, really right. Luke and her had really bonded the past couple of days and they were much alike. He liked studying, he liked talking about books, he understood that she didn't have a lot of free time because of her skating, he was kind and gentle and polite.
