"Hey Skylar!" Ashton cheerily replied. He glanced over at Luke but didn't say anything. I couldn't help but feel the tension between the guys. The silence grew more awkward with every moment that passed by. I decided to continue the conversation instead of standing there not saying anything like an idiot.
"So, Ashton, how have you been?" I felt Luke hovering over me from behind and he placed his slightly sandy hand on my shoulder.
"I've been alright. I've been spending most of my time surfing," he said glancing down at his board. "What about you?"
"Well, today was my last day of school. So Luke and I are just going to be hanging out together and stuff like that."
"If you aren't busy on Saturday I'm having a party at my house. You guys should come." If Luke weren't here, I would've said yes without second thought. But after taking a moment to think about it, I decided that Luke can't make all the decisions in this relationship. Right as I was about to say yes, Luke unexpectedly barged into the conversation.
"No, we can't. We have that thing." Luke said in a very pissed off tone.
"What thing? We don't have a thing..." I replied, I looked up at him confused.
"Well, it would be nice if you guys could come. You could meet my girlfriend. I have a feeling you and Lauren would get along." Ashton said, breaking up what just happened. Luke removed his hand from my shoulder, I couldn't tell if he was shocked or more relaxed.
"What time should we be there?" I asked Ashton. A smile formed on his face and I could tell Luke was not satisfied by my question.
"Skylar, we aren't going. We have that thing." Luke stearnly said.
"Well if you don't want to go, I don't care. I'll just go by myself." I hated that Luke and I have to argue in front of people, Ashton especially, but I didn't understand why he is being all defensive about this.
"No. You aren't going by yourself."
"Well then I'll ask Calum to go with me." As soon as I said that Luke gave me a glare that basically said don't even go there.
"You can show up whenever...and you know how to get there, right Luke?" Ashton's smile grew as he turned to face Luke. I felt like Luke was going to start throwing punches at Ashton but he thankfully didn't.
"We are not going." Wow, this situation could not be more awkward. I kind of wish I hadn't come up to Ashton. But I still don't understand why this is such a big deal to Luke, especially since he won't even tell me what happend between them anyway.
"Okay, well I'm going." I said, well aware that it was only going to piss Luke off even more. Before I was fully aware of what had just happened, Luke began to walk away.
"Luke!" I chased after him. "Luke, can you please just slow down a little bit?" He didn't slow down, instead he started walking back to the part of the beach where we had first arrived. Before I took off after Luke, I appogized to Ashton and left after saying goodbye.
My feet sunk themselves into the soft sand. This made it harder to walk, let alone run, so catching up to Luke wasn't easy. At one point I almost ran into this couple that were tanning. When I finally caught up to him he didn't say a word.
"Luke, what was that back there? Why did you just take off?"
Silence.
We walked the rest of the way to the car, and Luke still hasn't even looked at me. Honestly I was a little upset, he had no reason to be angry all I did was talk to Ashton. They used to be such good friends.
