╰┅┅┫ -ˋˏ *. ❂ .* ˎˊ- ┣┅┅╯Before Hancock and I left Goodneighbor, I switched the oversized flannel for my usual apparel, and then I bartered with Kleo. I handed over the various weapons and armor I had scavenged, and she gave me various types of grenades and a few higher-end mods for my shotgun, including one that made the bullets explode on impact.
It would definitely come in handy when the time came to confront Kellogg.
My jaw clenched at the thought of him. My emotions had months to manifest, and manifest they did. Such an unimaginable hatred of that mercenary brewed inside me.
What if Shawn didn't even survive—what if he was. . .dead because of Kellogg? My knuckles turned sickly white as I gripped the shotgun tightly. That rotten, cold-hearted bastard was about to meet his demise.
The snapping of Hancock's fingers a few inches away from my face brought me back to the present. He crossed his arms and fixed me with confused expression. "Hey. You check out on me? Asked if you wanted me to hang back."
I blinked a few times and shook my head slightly. "Oh, sorry." Kellogg's last announcement was that he ordered his synths to stand down, and that he just wanted to "chat." As I loaded my combat shotgun, I said, "Yeah. I can handle this."
Dealing with that man—no. No, Kellogg was no man. He could never pass for human. Dealing with that. . .that scum that stole my brother was my number one priority.
He shrugged and found a chair to recline in. With his ankles crossed at his feet, he relaxed into the chair with his arms behind his head. "Tusslin' with the Commonwealth's best mercenary? Can't say I'm not a little jealous."
I turned to face the doors, that familiar blistering fury welling up inside me. I spoke slowly in an attempt to keep the anger out of my voice. "I know you're confused, and I promise to give you some context afterwards. But just stay put for now. I need to do this alone."
I crossed the room and grabbed the door handles. A glance over my shoulder revealed Hancock's dark but bright eyes watching me sharply, with a twinge of concern flickering across his face. I sighed but decided that explaining the whole fiasco would cause a delay I wasn't willing to allow.
So, wordlessly, I rolled my shoulders back and held my head high. Then I pushed the doors open.
After walking down a small hallway, the room I entered was pitch black. With a buzz and a resounding thud, the wall lights at the far end of the room sprang to life. The process repeated, illuminating different areas of the room, which appeared to be Fort Hagen's main control center. A large screen and a world map burst forth, stretching across the farthest half of the right wall. Large glass panels were on the right and shimmered in the bright lights. Dozens upon dozens of blank terminals resting on desks were brought into the light. It appeared as though someone had tried to fit as many desks as they could into that one room.
Then that cold and calculated voice spoke with an unnerving calmness without an intercom or speaker. He didn't raise his voice, but it still carried throughout the room. "There she is. The most resilient person in the Commonwealth. Funny, I thought I had that honor."
Finally, the lights overhead cast their light down upon the mercenary. He was just as hideous as I remembered from my view in the cryogenic pod. His hairline seemed to recede more, and what hair he had left was beginning to be streaked with white and gray. The wrinkles on his face were more predominant, but otherwise he remained the same.
