Skye stood at the entrance door. For a second or two it was like the world around her froze. There was no noise, it was quiet. Skye pushed the door and walked into the building. Then there came the loud screams of children and the hustle and bustle of the busy corridor. Skye made her way to the reception desk.
"Hello dear, can I help you with anything?" A nice lady wearing what looked like a nurses uniform said from behind the desk.
Skye said nothing. Instead she slid the papers across the desk towards the woman. The blonde haired women looked up at her after scanning the papers. "Would you like a hot drink dear, you look cold. Have you traveled long?"
"From Ohio" Skye said without looking up. Her tone gave nothing away. Not even the fact that she could really use a drink and a sleep from all the traveling.
The woman came round from the desk and picked up Skye's bag from where she had put it down beside her. "Follow me" the woman offered a smile. Skye followed the woman down the corridor. Children ran passed Skye, she looked over to her right where older children were playing a board game then another woman wearing the same uniform as the nice lady passed carrying what looked like a tiny new born baby. They stopped when they came to a brown door titled 'office'. The woman opened the door and held it for Skye. Skye took the opportunity to look at her name badge which read 'Lillian'.
"So hunny, who are you here with?" Lillian asked as she sat down at the desk and motioned for Skye to sit in the chair across from her.
"I came alone" Skye answered.
"And your parents know?" The woman interrogated her.
"Of course" Skye answered quickly, perhaps too quickly.
"So if I call the numbers on this form" the woman said lifting it up and peering at Skye. "Then your parents will answer knowing that their child is in New York? Alone?"
"Not exactly" Skye told the truth. She expected a different reaction from the woman, Lillian than the one she got.
"Why are you here dear?" Lillian asked sympathetically.
"I didn't know" Skye stuttered. "I didn't know I was adopted"
