I sat down on the old bed in his room as he shut the door behind us. He sighed and slowly sat down beside me, grabbing my hands, gazing into my eyes.
“Max, I don’t know how much longer I can stay here. I might have to leave again, try to find a way to stop The Takers.” He dropped his gaze and let go of my hands.
I was at a loss for words. “Reuben… Take me with you. We can do this together, I know we can.” I kissed him, hoping he would say yes.
He kissed me back and shook his head. “I don’t know Max, it seems dangerous. I would hate for you to get hurt.” I quickly pulled away.
“You sound just like Denver.” I made a disgusted face. I couldn’t believe it. My boyfriend, or I guess he was, wasn’t letting me come with him to defeat The Takers. The same people who killed my parents.
“I refuse to stay behind while you go risk your life.”
“Well, I refuse you go and get hurt Max. I love you,” he said leaning in to kiss me, “I can’t afford living my life knowing you got hurt because of me.”
“Do you not think I’m strong enough? That I’m not able to take care of myself?”
Reuben sat up shaking his head, “Max that’s not what-“ I cut him off.
“Reuben, I love you. You’re the first guy I’ve ever loved. But I’m coming, and I don’t care what you say or try to do.”
His face suddenly turned dark, “I love you too, but you’re not coming.”
Suddenly, everything went dark.
